Halloween is over. Now, what do you do with the pumpkins?!? Ask your local ranchers if they want them! IF it's a painted pumpkin wash/cut the paint off before feeding. And if you have the seeds, they are believed to be a natural dewormer (not a proven fact just what Google says). Many ranchers are also buying whole pumpkins from grocery stores for a "salvage" cost and adding them to the mixer wagon or just breaking them up and feeding on the ground (be sure to remove the stem)

To respond to yesterday's poll, we believe that the 20% range cubes are the best option for our producers.

*Using ball park numbers-not factoring in transport or bagging cost*
~average cost per day of bulk cubes if $0.39/hd/day
~~feeding rate is 2-4lbs/hd/day
~average cost per day of 30% tubs is $0.61/hd/day
~~feeding rate is .75-1.25lbs/hd/day

Cubes offer higher energy than tubs and the frequency of being around the cattle daily helps keep them tame and easier to work.
As mentioned in a comment on the original post, cubes can have mineral and ionophers added to them increasing the value and quality of the cube. (After adding mineral and rumensin expect the cost per head per day to go up close to $0.12 for a total of $0.51/head/day.

Tubs are an amazing resource for producers who have pastures/stubble fields too far from the yard to check daily. They are also very convenient for the combination farmer/rancher who is still trying to harvest.

Either option is good and will benefit for your livestock. Now is the cheapest time to put on weight on those cows to get them in good condition for winter.

On Sunday Kenya and Luke gave a tour of the feed plant to a large group of 4-H kids! (and their parents) We love being able to help educate people on where there feed is coming from and how it is manufactured. There were a lot of good questions asked today and a lot of eyes opened at how the manufacturing process works! Our High School Vo-Ag student was part of the group. He did a nice demonstration at how we fill, weigh, and load totes for customers. The future for agriculture looks bright and we hope that everyone takes a few minutes out of their day to answer questions kids may have about animal agriculture!

How do you sell? Private off the farm? Haul into a sale barn? What is YOUR reputation with the buyers and the sale barn staff? A simple pre-weaning program such as:

Creep feed for 2 weeks
Wean
Weaning feed in the dry lot for 2 weeks
Sell

The above can make a huge difference in what your calves will bring! Are they bunk ready? Will the feed lot have to treat a bunch of sick animals? Will they be easy to handle?

All simple things to keep in mind this year when calves are bringing record prices. Get every dollar you can!

Here is a prime example as to why you should buy your feed from a local feed plant like us. ADM and Alltech just merged their US feed manufacturing operations. Alltech owns Hubbard. And ADM just released their plans to "stretch" beef and cut end consumer prices by using plant based protein. At Feed Mix we still eat steak and like our beef real!
