Just a reminder that we are closed on Mondays. It’s our day to catch up on picking, mowing, laundry, grocery shopping etc. today we brought the sheep up to the barn for their monthly hands on check up. They spend from May-early December out in the pastures. We eyeball them daily but need to do detailed checkups periodically. We check their body condition, feet, and for any injuries. We have one gal who has a sore foot/ankle, I see no obvious injury. We will keep her in the barn for a few days to rest her foot.

It’s a great day to pick some apples and pumpkins and enjoy the beautiful fall landscape.

Please check in at the farm stand to get our bags for picking into. Bring a wagon if you’d like for hauling apples, pumpkins or kids. To enter the orchard you must purchase apples.

Plenty of delicious apples for the picking!
🍎Ida Red- mildly tart and firm, great for fresh, baked, sauce or pie
🍎Northern Spy -excellent pie apple, firm and tart
🍏Mutsu - make sure you get some, they are crunchy, tangy and juicy.
🍎Jonagold - a combination of Jonathon (tart) and Golden Delicious (sweet), crisp and juicy
🍎Empire - tangy and delicious, my fav
🍏Golden Delicious- crunchy, juicy, sweet
🍎Red Delicious- crisp mildly sweet
🍏Jonathon -firm and tart
🍎Honey Crisp- sweet and juicy ( running low)

🐝We keep bees specifically to pollinate the fruit trees. We also plant pollinator blocks with wildflowers and grasses to provide food for the bees throughout the summer and fall. You may spot the hives near the woods if you are in the pumpkin patch. Our honey is raw, unpasteurized (never heated) and is for sale in the farm stand.

Apple season won’t last forever and neither will this fantastic weather. Many varieties are at their peak of flavor right now and still plentiful in our orchard. The fall colors are starting to color the landscape. Come on out and pick some apples and pumpkins. This is a great family experience. Show the kids where apples actually come from, take some home and make an apple crisp or pie. Put your apples in the refrigerator to maintain the fresh crisp flavors.

Let’s talk about apple sauce. It’s that time of the year to store up some deliciousness for the winter. You can make it with or without sugar and spices, it’s healthy, economical and such a treat. Kids love it. Follow along with my pictures and you will be surprised how easy it is.

Octobers’ warm sunny days and cool nights means the later season apples are at their peak of flavor. Mutsu, Northern Spy, Ida Reds, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious in particular. There still plenty of Empire, Jonagold, Jonathon and some Honey Crisp for u-pick.

Mondays are usually apple picking days for me but my granddaughter was over yesterday and wanted to make pie. Obviously I can’t say no to her so… we picked some Northern Spy apples and she made her first pies. She had to decipher my grandmas cursive handwriting too. The pies turned out fantastic.

Open Sunday 11-5

Golden Delicious: you’ve all heard of them. Not trendy, maybe even boring you say. Well, you really need to pick some fresh off the trees and try them again. They are crunchy, juicy and sweet, absolutely delicious. My grandkids love them! Perfect for fresh eating, lunchboxes, paired with a sharp cheese, sliced in a sandwich and also make wonderful applesauce.

There are hints of color showing up all over the farm. Don’t let this spectacular fall weekend slip by without a trip to the apple orchard and pumpkin patch.

This looks like a glorious fall weekend to get outside and pick Golden and Red Delicious, Mutsu, Northern Spy, Jonagold, Empire, a few McIntosh, Jonathon, and Honey crisp apples, all ready for you to pick. Ida Reds will be ready next week.

We opened the last section of u-pick Honey Crisp so this is probably the last week for those.

If you are in a hurry, the farm stand is stocked with fresh picked apples, our raw honey, and squash.

As many of you know, our granddaughter was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at age 2. She underwent 16 months of intensive treatment at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and is now a thriving 8 year old.

September is pediatric cancer awareness month. But awareness is not enough. Pediatric cancer research is minimally funded by the government and relies mostly on private donations. Research is critical to find new and less devastating treatments and support for survivors. Most survivors are left with life long side effects from the chemo, radiation, surgeries, and infections suffered during treatments. The children and families need support.

Ways to help:
1. donate blood or platelets ( kids need these to survive the treatments)
2. Take a meal to a family who is fighting cancer.
3. Let your representatives know they need to fund pediatric cancer research
4. Donate money.
