As we finish up our apple season this year we want to thank our great customers. Your support keeps our little farm going year after year. We see so many familiar faces and welcome the new ones.

Many of you have asked about our granddaughter, Dakota. She is thriving! She is now 7, a first grader, likes to dance and play football, and her smile brings joy wherever she goes.

As far as apples go, we are open until 6 today. Then the orchard will be closed. The farm stand will be open self serve (bring correct change or a check) through Friday Oct 31, with Spys, Mutsu, Jonathon, and Ida Reds. You can call the farm phone to see if we will be open next week. 655-1454

Blessings,

Kathy and Phil

Spa day for the girls. Hair and nails!
We shear the sheep in the fall so they aren’t too woolly when they have lambs 3-4 months from now. They will stay near the barn for a few days to adjust and allow the wool to start to regrow., then back to pasture till it snows. Their thick wool keeps them cool in the summer and keeps the bugs from biting.

Don’t forget this is the last weekend for u-pick apples and pumpkins.

It’s time to make applesauce! I love Ida Reds for applesauce because if you cook with the skin on you get a lovely pink sauce. Mutsu, Spy and Golden Delicious also make delicious applesauce. You can freeze your sauce too! Ziplock, small plastic containers or glass jars (leave head space) all work. You have two basic ways to do this.

1. Wash, core and quarter your apples, cover the bottom of a pan with 1/2 inch of water and cook the apples till soft. Run through a food mill. Done!

2. Wash, core and peel the apples first. Cook as above till soft. Mash up a bit and you get a lovely chunky sauce. So good warm.

It’s time to fill your freezer with sauce and frozen apple slices for enjoying all winter long. I love the feeling of having some of my fresh summer/ fall harvest tucked in the freezer.

Apple season won’t last forever so get stocked up now.

Finally! Get out your sweaters and flannels, fall is here. Apple and pumpkin picking in all the fabulous fall colors. The late varieties of apples really are spectacular at their peak.

Ida Red- firm and mildly tart
Mutsu-crunchy, juicy, tangy
Golden Delicious-crunchy, sweet
Red Delicious- crunchy,mildly sweet

Eat them fresh, pair with cheese or peanut butter, make an apple crisp, and make some applesauce. Keep them in the refrigerator to keep them crisp.

We strongly encourage you to take them home and wash them before eating. They are exposed to dust, bugs, birds, smoke all summer.

Let the kids roam the fields searching for the perfect pumpkin.

Did you know you can freeze apples? I slice them with my apple peeler corer slicer gizmo and pop the slices in ziplock bags. You can add sugar and spices if you want but I don’t. I freeze the bags and then when I want to make a crisp or pie or applesauce, I just dump the frozen slices into a pan or crust add whatever spices I want and bake. Try it. You will be glad you did. My helpers like to eat the slices as fast as I can prepare them! I tend to use Spys, Jonathons or Idas for this. Look for my easy applesauce post coming soon. It’s just that time of year! In the meantime come on out and pick some apples.
