This years calving season we have been busy and blessed. 37 babies running around and driving their Mamas nuts. Lots of calf racing along the hills, kicking and loving life. Now only 16 more cows to freshen.

These babies are just adorable🌷🐄❤️

Last night we finally were able to install our newest investment to the farm, a maternity pen. With this pen, we will finally have a safer way to help cows with difficult births.
Before we would use chained gates, ratchet straps and halters to secure the mom. It wasn’t the safest for us, but it worked. Macgyver farming at its finest🫣

Here is how it works: The gate to the right of the head gate opens up so the cow can walk in. This pen consists of a circle gate from the front right, that follows through to the back left. We close the gate, which has 2 fail stops that doesn’t allow her to push the gate back toward us. We just continue to guide her to the self catching head gate. There is a rear gate we can enter that allows us to tend to the Moms birth. After, we release Mom and allow her to recover with her new baby in a secure area.

This pen can also be used for other medical needs, such as our Veterinarian assisting a difficult birth, evaluating a hurt cow or bull and pregnancy checks. Another is safely administering medication to the animals.

This is a huge game changer for us and excited to use it for the first time. Farming and having big animals is one of the most dangerous occupations a person can have.

Upgrades are not cheap. However reducing harm or death to someone is priceless. ❤️🤠🐄

My girl Sweetie, she is about 17 years old. If she’s in the pasture and I call her name, she will turn her head. Loves to get brushed, scratches and following me when she thinks I didn’t give her enough attention. Her very first calf we delivered, he was a huge, so we named him Goliath.

Every farm has their favorites. Sweetie is one of mine. ❤️I look forward to as many years as i can get from her.

Today was a great day!

I’m not saying it was easy, because nothing in farming is easy. Cows broke a gate and escaped the barnyard. Jamie and Quin came over and helped replace two gates, then got all naughty 70 animals, plus babies back where they belonged.

Of course then Three calves born.
2 heifers and a bull calf. One heifer perfectly fine. The bull calf needed splints due to the tendons constricted. And the last decided to come breach. All hands on deck for that emergency. By this point Don, Quin, Jamie and I get everything set up with a make shift chute so we could save this baby. We had Jamie running all over getting supplies. When it was go time, Quin was able to deliver the calf, and she was ALIVE. She struggle to breath due to all the blood and goop that she sucked in, but after clearing her airway and lungs, she finally started to breathe normal.

Today was a rough one, but it all worked out. Some days are good, and some days not so much.

Three healthy babies, I call that a win!

When I asked Asher if he wanted a ride, he gave me the biggest smile and nod. He climbed on my lab and made himself comfortable. He held onto that lap belt, and giggled the whole time we drove around. I think Ashers face says it all!

Its never to young to be a farmer.

Calving season has kicked off pretty slow, but that’s ok! Right now we have 6 babies with 50 to go. They are all healthy, and running around playing calf games❤️

Remember Mr. Yuck? These stickers were placed on everything in the house that was poisonous. If I remember right, the old phone books had them for their customers.

Now to get to my point, Balloons. Helium balloons to be exact. This Balloon was found in the pasture with our cows. Oh I’m sure they thought it was for one of them, I mean it did say Happy Birthday🎊🎉

Thankfully while our cows were surrounding the balloon, it didn’t pop. Cattle are like toddlers, the first thing they would do is start chewing it. When swallowed, balloons and their ribbons can cause a blockage in the cow's digestive tract, leading to a slow and painful death by starvation.

For those that choose balloons for parties, gifts or large releases for a cause. Please consider other options. We label things for humans, why aren’t we doing the same for all animals.

I believe balloons of all sorts should have the Mr. Yuck stickers!
