I’ve supported President Trump for a long time, but I can’t agree with the idea that importing more cheap beef is the answer to high beef prices.

The American cattle herd didn’t get this small overnight, and it won’t be rebuilt overnight either. Ranchers across this country have battled drought, high feed costs, fuel, equipment, interest rates and just about every other rising input you can name.

Bringing in cheaper foreign beef might sound like an easy way to lower prices at the grocery store today, but what does it do to the American producer we need tomorrow?

If we want cheaper beef long term, we need to rebuild the American cow herd and make it possible for American cattlemen to stay in business and expand — not undercut them when the market finally gives them an incentive to do exactly that.

This isn’t about Democrat or Republican for me. It’s about American agriculture.

We learned a long time ago that being dependent on foreign countries for things we need can become a problem in a hurry. Food shouldn’t be any different.

Food security is national security.

Support the American rancher. Rebuild the American cow herd. Keep American beef American.
