Welcome to the final installment of our chicken maintenance series! 🛠️Today, we’re talking vent trims 🍑✂️

Over time, feathers around the vent can get long and sit close to the ground, making them magnets for dirt, mud, and—you guessed it—feces. A simple vent trim can help keep your birds cleaner and more comfortable, while also improving mating success by keeping the area clear and accessible for nature’s cloacal kiss. 😚🐔

Jessica is giving us the rundown today with a Light Sussex hen and rooster. Tune in and learn how to keep those feathers fresh and functional! ✂️✨

We’re back with this week’s second installment of chicken maintenance! 🛠️🐓

Today, we’re talking crest trims—a simple tool that can make a big difference for your birds. A crest, although beautiful, can sometimes grow long enough to obstruct your chicken’s vision. Those extra feathers can even collect water, dirt, and mud, creating a greater risk for eye infections.

The solution? A little haircut! ✂️🐔 Watch as Jessica walks you through how to safely and carefully give your bird a crest trim🌿✨

It’s time for a little chicken maintenance. 🛠️🐓

We’re kicking off our Chicken Maintenance Series with an important skill for rooster care: spur trimming.

Rooster spurs can grow incredibly long and sharp over time. For birds kept in a secure environment where predator defense isn’t a concern, keeping excessively long spurs trimmed can help protect both your flock and their handlers. Sharp, overgrown spurs can injure hens during mating, pose a risk to you, and even interfere with a rooster’s mobility.

Let our resident chicken pro, Vivian, show you how to safely give those spurs a quick trim. 💅🐓

Meet the Flarry Eye Grey 💚🐔

Hailing from Ireland, these beautiful gamefowl are best known for their striking bright red eyes (“flarry” comes from the Irish word for “fiery.”)🔥But those eyes are just the beginning. Flarry Eye Greys are known for their:

✨ Beautiful crests
🐣 Exceptional broodiness in hens
🌿 Incredible foraging ability—perfect for a free-range flock

One of our favorite traits? Their hens can continue laying consistently well into their later years. We have hens at 5 and 6 years old that are still reliably producing eggs!
