Stauber’s Gems Farm

Stauber’s Gems Farm We have a tiny herd of ADGA registered Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats in Eastern, NC.

We breed for hardiness and longevity as well as high production, correct conformation, ease of hand-milking, and friendly dispositions.

Still so impressed with the production from my two yearling first fresheners! They had dropped production while we were away, but it’s coming back again.

This buck also gets an appreciation post today for two reasons. The first reason is that we had a part of our fence break and his 4 month-old-daughter, Yellow Citrine, found it. She also happened to be in heat. I watched in horror from the house window as I realized she was in the buck pen, standing by her sire and flagging her tail in his face.

I yelled for my husband and we raced out there. I was certain she would have ended up bred, which is not good at all at 4 months old! By the time we got out into the pen, this lovely buck was still lying down chewing cud, looking at this little doeling in raging heat like “you don’t belong.” Our other buck was eating hay. No breedings happened and Chocolate received a big hug and kiss from me 😅😁

The second reason for his appreciation post is that his daughter just went grand champion at her first show. I had almost sold Chocolate about a month ago because we have a tiny herd and our lines were getting too tight already. We needed to add a new buck (Coda). Three bucks felt like too much for four does. He had a buyer and everything was set until I clipped his daughter. Once I saw her, I knew I couldn’t let Chocolate go yet. She was just what I wanted in a kid, and I knew I wanted more of her in our herd. Her width was incredible. A big thank you to that buyer for forgiving me and letting me keep Chocolate!

Chocolate (Bella Fattoria Lady’s Choice) is a very special buck. He is absolutely huge, but he is the biggest sweetheart and baby. Not a mean bone in him. Yes, he lacks in the intelligence department, but we love him anyway!

This little doeling deserves her own separate post. I’m so incredibly proud of her! In her very first class, she ended up going grand champion under judge Pete Snyder! I believe there were 22 other beautiful senior kids in that class. Judge Pete Snyder had lovely things to say about her and her natural correctness. Stauber’s Gems Yellow Citrine was my experiment doeling being an outcross between three very distinct lines. I did not expect her to place so well, which just makes this even more special!

We were on the fence about showing her in the second ring since she already had her dry leg, but we wanted the other judge’s feedback and for my previous student to have a chance to show her too since we only brought two goats to the show. We did try to throw her back legs off in the second ring as to not steal the opportunity for another junior to get her dry leg. Even so, she still went 1st under Kris Farley.

She also received many compliments on her personality yesterday. She was so sweet and calm despite never having left the farm before let alone been at a show. Personality is such a big thing to me that this made me very proud of her and Pearl.

Funny story—I almost scratched her the day before because I didn’t do a good job with her tattoo in one ear. She was the first goat I’ve ever tattooed, and I just wanted the experience showing her and figured we would not place well enough to have to worry about her tattoo. 😬

A big thank you to my mentors for helping me breed such a nice little doeling and a big thank you to my husband for making it possible for us to actually get to a show. 😊

We had such a great time at the NCDGBA show this weekend in Rocky Mount, NC! It was so fun to actually get to meet so many other breeders in person and see their beautiful goats. So many stunning goats at this show!

And of course, I have to mention Zenquility Acres for helping me figure everything out yesterday and her continued mentorship since I first started with dairy goats. Her character as a person and breeder is outstanding, and I loved seeing her beautiful goats in person finally. I would have been absolutely clueless without her help and the help of many other kind people yesterday!

It was also so much fun to have my student from when I taught 5th grade come and learn to show. Thank you to Alicia Grubb Bell and her family for their help, support, and taking most of these photos! Sadie did so well for her first show!

I loved how kind, helpful, and supportive people were at this show. It made the whole experience more fun and relaxed.

We are at our very first show today and had to be a bit creative to keep the juniors dry from all this rain. They aren’t too pleased with this experience so far!

Thank you to both Heather Wilder and Amanda Marie Steklenburg for taking such good care of the herd while we were away! We are blessed to have such wonderful neighbors that made it possible for us to spend a week in Minnesota with family. ❤️

This doe is a good example of why we should be patient with those awkward, junior does. I overlooked Poppy for an entire year because she was awkward with a steeper rump and higher hips. Now, her rump is absolutely lovely and she is much more uphill. We are grateful to have this special doe here.

Baby gates aren’t just for toddlers around here. They also keep the goats off the porch where they’d eat all the toddler toys!
