We know there are fellow animal lovers out there who are worried for our red devon cattle with the snow to come. We can assure you that we do our best to keep them safe and that we are meeting their needs. We heavily researched the breed before selecting them for our climate, and one of the reasons they made the cut was their durability and heartiness in varying climates like our own here in Maryland. We will have a mobile shelter set up in their paddock for when the snow arrives, so they have the choice to take shelter from the snow if they so choose. They have access to fresh hay and water. Here is just a few snippets of research that we collected years ago when preparing to add cattle on to our farm.

Here are some facts about the breed and how cattle stay warm in the winter...

-Red Devons are known for being extremely adaptable to major changes in temperature and are known for having the thickest hides of all common breeds in the world ...making for a cozy coat to keep them warm in the wet, cold and snowy winter months

-A cows rumen(one of it's 4 stomach chambers) is a chamber full of microbes that break down plants via fermentation. Fermentation produces heat. In the winter months, when forage is sparse, we supplement with hay, which increases the amount of fermentation happening in their rumen which in turn produces more heat and helps keep the cattle warm

-Cattle have a natural desire to huddle together to prevent heat loss and to insulate each other..teamwork makes the dream work

-Water is crucial for cattle in the winter. "Rumen microorganisms require water to ferment effectively. Water serves a crucial function in the rumen by aiding in rumen development. Water aids in this development by diluting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced by the rumen." (Pfau, 2020). Therefore, adequate water is necessary for fermentation and thus maintaining warmth.
