It has been an interesting last couple of weeks around our apiary.

2 more swarms captured, multiple colony inspections, and cleanup around our separate nuc yard. We are also pleased to announce that we have received our State of Alabama Apiary Health Certificate, ALABEE1322! We plan to sell a few nucs and queens in the future.

We didn’t have this one on the bingo card today, but did a quick look in the apiary before the rain, and actively saw a swarm in progress.

They landed in one of our apple trees, and I got them moved to a swarm trap just before it started pouring again!

It looks like the girls are loving this beautiful Sunday afternoon even more than we are…

A couple frames from recent splits…looks like the new queens are settling in just fine with those early brood patterns!

It has been a great day helping a coworker/friend get started with his beekeeping journey. We installed 2 nucs and moved a swarm he caught in to their new homes today. Now to do some more splits/inspections in our own apiary this afternoon…

The coolest thing I’ve witnessed yet in the time we’ve been keeping bees happened this evening.

During colony inspections, I found a queen cell that looked close to maturity and upon closer inspection I could see movement from a small hole near the top of the cell. I removed it and placed it on a frame with another small recently caught swarm that appears to be queenless. I finished inspecting other colonies and returned a few minutes later and checked again to ensure it was still attached to the frame and shockingly the new queen was out of the cell and crawling around! The worker bees were attending to her already. Hopefully this prevented the other colony from swarming, and will help this one survive and begin to thrive assuming a successful upcoming mating flight occurs!

It was a beautiful Easter Sunday. Church this morning, cooked a big lunch, and then a great late afternoon in the apiary. We made another split today and brought these 3 recent splits/new nucs home. The new queens are all actively laying, so they look to be off to a great start!

It has been an interesting day here on the farm that started with planting 20 tomato plants. We just got home yesterday from a great trip with the kids for spring break and went out today to check swarm traps and recent splits that had been temporarily moved elsewhere. All of those new nucs looked great and had their queens out of the cages. There was no activity in those swarm traps.

As soon as we got home, there was a swarm actively moving in to the trap here at our main apiary! We’ll get them moved to their new home in the next day or two.

The best part is after inspecting all our other colonies, it looks like these bees came from somewhere else. Happy Easter everyone, Sunday is coming!
