Become one of our member families for an exclusive beyond-CSA experience, or peruse our individual offerings via our farm's e-store at www.northstarhomestead.com. Swing by this summer Wednesday through Sundays for our artisan sheep milk gelato, ancient grains bakery treats, coffee, or tea. Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend on Saturday evenings we'll also be offering our delicious wood-fired pizzas to-go. For additional inventory for curbside pickup, please visit our farm's e-store at www.northstarhomestead.com Populated with 1000+ items updated daily, this easy-to-use platform is how you can pre-order fresh aquaponics greens, pints of our artisan gelato, A2 cheese and dairy, made-to-order ancient grains baked goods, smartly sourced Organic produce, pasture raised meats, panty goods like homemade jams, soaps, yarn, art, gifts, and more. The next phase of our Haymaking Independence was just completed! The barnyard makeover and new equipment shed. From tearing down the extremely old woodshed to creating the new site and revamping the drainage in the entire barnyard to the completion of the build, it was quite the reclamation process! Looking forward to hauling out all of the equipment from winter storage spots so we can start making this year hay crop!

Thanks to 3 Nails AG Construction for a great experience constructing this project! We had purchased the building kit from Hansen Pole Buildings and 3Nails was able to fit us into their schedule and get this build done in 3 days. Highly recommend both 3Nails and Hansen Pole Buildings!

Lots of rain today means one dog that loves it and doesn't want to come inside (Watson) while the other one (Finlee) would rather not get his dainty paws wet. Guess who did chores today!
Thankful for the rain at North Star Homestead Farms

Today's Shepherding Moment is all about teaching a first time mama ewe now to stand to nurse for the first time. My trick? Rubbing her belly. Often first timers (or primes as we call them) don't enjoy the feeling of a lamb nursing for the first time. They will lift their leg and stumble forward or kick out their leg at the lamb (nothing like a donkey kick mind you! But it's enough to make the lamb fall down and potentially get stepped on). By rubbing her belly once the lamb is nursing it causes her to arch her back and tilt her udder forward. Not only does this make it a whole lot easier for the lamb to get a great latch, it also makes her plant her back feet and she no longer is thinking about getting away from the lamb. A tiny bit of nursing causes a great rush of oxytocin in her and that makes it all click in her head. After this session, I'll leave them for a little bit and then come back and repeat it until I peek in and see that everyone is golden.

Have you been a long-time enthusiast of Laura Berlage-Story Weavers "Down on the Farm" column? Would you love to sharpen your saw as a descriptive writer? All writing styles welcome to her new class! Learn more at https://forms.gardenofneuro.org/nx/portal/neonevents/events?path=%2Fportal%2Fevents%2F42357

One of the best ways to share what you love is to teach! Starting in late May, I'll be offering my first online writing workshop, in partnership with Garden of Neuro Institute! I'll include the link in the chat. Here's the scoop about the class, which welcomes writers of all types:

We have all been told “show, don’t tell,” but how do we make that mantra work for us as writers? This course invites you to dive into the sensory world of sight, sound, smell, touch, and environment to build writing muscle for drawing the reader into the world of your story. Learn real, actionable ways to take flat sentences and bring them to life, with examples, exercises, and discussion. Start wherever you are on your writing journey, in any genre, and build the immersive experience of words on your page.

Readers are looking for an experience they can feel and see in their mind. You already have that world in your head as you write—let us look behind the curtain and experience it! Struggling with this aspect in your writing, not certain where to start, or just want to sharpen the saw of your craft? We’ll meet for five sessions to learn, explore, write, and share.
