Kava is a 3000 year old ancient drink from the South Pacific Islands. All natural, it’s made from the roots of the Kava bush and then infused through cold water. Kava drink is made solely from the roots of the Piper methysticum pepper plant. There are two forms of roots: The BASAL ROOT which is the "trunk" or "rootstock" of the root system and the LATERAL ROOTS which are the "Smaller roots". Each
type of root has a different flavor and effect. By weight, for each individual Kava plant, 35% are Lateral Roots and 65% are Basal Roots. Kava is a traditional drink throughout the South Pacific made from the roots of the Kava plant, (sometimes called Kava-Kava). The scientific name is Piper methysticum, which means "Intoxicating pepper"
Kava roots and water make a relaxing beverage that has been used and enjoyed in ceremonies for thousands of years. Kava promotes a good mood and a calm and relaxed feeling. Kava is very important to the social life and cultural identities throughout the South Pacific Isles. Fijians greet visitors with a bowl of this welcoming grog. Some call it the Elixir of peace and happiness. To answer this one we will say that no one drinks Kava for is taste. Kava juice has a unique taste that can be hard to get used to. The taste varies depending on the type of Kava plant or part of the Kava root. Some will say it tastes like dirt, but it tastes like peppery dry root. If you are concerned about taste, we recommend the Instant Kava Mix which has a milder Kava taste. Kava is always served in small volumes and swallowed as a shot. The Kava aftertaste can be helped by eating a piece of chocolate, acidic fruit (like pineapple) or even green olives. Any fruit drink may help also. Don't forget that we don't drink Kava for the taste but for the effect. That's a story stretching over three millennia... Kava is grog with a deep tradition of meaning and taboo in island culture but essentially it is consumed to remove the edge, to promote relaxation and a good mood.
