Day three on Crete! We spent our morning exploring the ruins of Knossos - the heart of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization and often called Europe's oldest city.

We then ventured south to Domaine Paterianakis, the first w**ery on Crete to go fully organic as far back as the 90's, now run by sisters Emmanouela and Niki on the limestone slopes of PDO Peza. These always beautiful w**es are grown in the same hills the Minoans would have planted with their ancient varieties.

Our evening finished at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, face to face with some of the most iconic artifacts of the Bronze Age, including the mysterious Phaistos Disc.

Day two of our tour of Crete and Rhodes took us into the vineyards of Heraklion’s PDO Peza, the heart of Cretan w**e country for a head-first dive into the region's w**es.

We began at Titakis W**ery in Kounavi, where Maria, the third generation of the family led us through their vast cellar and poured us versions of some of the island’s signature grapes, from crisp Vidiano and aromatic Moschato Spinas to the native hearty reds Kotsifali and Mandilari.

Next we climbed to Lyrarakis W**ery for a wonderful afternoon tasting in the mountain village of Alagni, where the family has rescued ancient Cretan grape varieties such as Dafni, Melissaki, and Plyto from near extinction. Ancient stone w**e presses still dot the surrounding fields, a reminder of how deep the roots of w**emaking run here.

We closed the day with our welcome dinner in Heraklion at Peskesi, celebrating farm-to-table Cretan cuisine with the whole group. A perfect start!

A few of our guests (and one of our tour leaders, coming all the way from Hawaii) are still making their way to Heraklion, but our 2026 Ancient W**es Tour, Isles of the Gods: W**es and Wonders of Crete and Rhodes, is officially off and running! 🍷🏛️🏃🏽🏃🏼‍♀️

This evening, we visited the headquarters of W**es of Crete for a tasting and introduction to Cretan w**es. Tomorrow, we will begin exploring the viticulture of the island with visits to two exceptional w**eries: Titakis and Lyrarakis.

As we recently passed the four-year mark of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we’ve been reflecting on a history that stretches back thousands of years, and which inspired our upcoming Ancient W**es Club release: Europe From East to West: W**es of the Steppe. 🇺🇦
