Meet our last hen in the flock, Shania 🤍

Shania (yes,as in Twain) is Dolly’s sister and another one of our one-year-old Ancona girls here at Sweet Gum Farm.

If you’re trying to tell the sisters apart, there’s one easy way: Shania’s comb doesn’t lay over quite as far as Dolly’s. Otherwise, those two can keep you guessing!

Shania is our little roadrunner. She’s always on the move and has two speeds: moving and moving faster. Shania has a mind of her own and the legs to make sure she gets wherever that mind takes her.

The funny thing is, she absolutely does her own thing… as long as her own thing is somewhere near everybody else. 😂

She’ll take off across the yard like she’s got very important chicken business to tend to, wander off to investigate whatever has caught her eye, and then suddenly realize she’s forgotten the most important part of her adventure: the rest of the flock 🐓🐔

Shania lays small white eggs, and she brings just the right amount of sass and personality to the henhouse.

She’s busy, curious, quick on her feet, and perfectly content doing things her own way, as long as she knows her people are close by.

Sweet Shania, you’re a little hard to keep up with, but we sure wouldn’t want you any other way.

🤎 Meet Hazel 🤎

Well, y’all… it’s time to introduce one of the sweetest little ladies at Sweet Gum Farm.

This is Hazel, our one-year-old Plymouth Rock and the sister of our precious Happy Feet. And just like her sister, Hazel is genuinely a sweet girl plain and simple.

Hazel has one big goal in this life:

She wants to be a mama. 🥹🐔

She has already appointed herself the official protector of all eggs. If there’s an egg anywhere around that henhouse, Hazel believes it is her personal responsibility to make sure it is safe, accounted for, and properly supervised.

And honestly, she takes that job very seriously.

She’s also the second sweetest and gentlest girl in the henhouse, coming in just behind her sister Happy Feet. Hazel would much rather quietly stay close to her people and her flock than get caught up in all the commotion.

She absolutely does not like being by herself. If everybody wanders off, Hazel is right behind them like, “Well, where y’all going? I wasn’t finished being with you.” 😂

And if you happen to sit down and give her a little attention? She has one very specific request:

Scratch me right beside my back legs, please.

That’s her spot. And once you find it, she’ll settle right in like she’s been waiting all day for her appointment. 🥰

Hazel is tender-hearted, nurturing, protective, and just a little bit clingy—and we wouldn’t change a thing about her.

Some chickens want to rule the roost.

Some want to steal the treats.

Hazel just wants to take care of everybody and be close to her people. 🤎

And if the good Lord ever decides she gets to be a mama, I have a feeling she’s going to be one mighty fine one.

Meet Dolly 🤍

Y’all, let me introduce you to Dolly, our one-year-old Ancona hen and quite possibly the most unbothered chicken at Sweet Gum Farm. 😂🐔

Dolly truly does not have a care in this world. While everybody else is busy sorting out who’s boss, who got the treats, and who’s standing where they shouldn’t be, Dolly is just over here living her best little chicken life.

She lays small white eggs, runs like a roadrunner when she gets a wild hair, and has made an entire game out of hide-and-seek.

And when it comes to nesting?

Well, Dolly has chosen her favorite nesting box, and she has made her position very clear:

That is HER box.

Doesn’t matter if somebody is already in it 🤷🏼‍♀️

She’ll walk right up, look at them like, “Well, scoot over, darlin’,” and proceed to plop herself down beside them like there’s room for the whole county.

Apparently personal space is just a suggestion around here.

Dolly is sweet, silly, independent, and completely comfortable being exactly who she is. She doesn’t fuss over much, she doesn’t worry about the pecking order, and she certainly isn’t letting a full nesting box ruin her plans.

She’s just Dolly.

And honestly, we could all use a little more of that Dolly attitude- mind your business, find your happy place, and don’t let anybody tell you there isn’t room for you. 🤍

Meet Stella — aka T-Rex 🦖🐔

Well, y’all… after losing our beloved Judge Judy to the summer heat, somebody had to step up and take over.

And apparently, Stella had already filed the paperwork no matter what Aunt Bea thinks.

This is Stella, our one-year-old Sapphire Splash, and she is officially the boss of Sweet Gum Farm.

Not because anybody voted for her.

Not because she was elected.

And certainly not because she asked permission.

She simply walked in, puffed up, and declared herself in charge.

Stella is the fiercest, most stubborn little leader you’ve ever met. She has an opinion about EVERYTHING, and if you happen to disagree with her… well, bless your heart. You’re about to hear all about it.

She keeps the flock in line, keeps her sister Alice on her toes, and generally conducts herself like she owns the place.

Which, if you ask Stella, she does.

She earned the nickname T-Rex honestly. She may be feathered and adorable, but underneath that pretty Sapphire Splash plumage is a tiny dinosaur with absolutely zero interest in backing down. 🦖 Just ask Cash 😳

And sweetness?

Oh, she has some.

You just have to catch her when she’s too tired to argue.

That’s when T-Rex becomes Stella again, and for a brief, beautiful moment, she might let you admire her without lodging a formal complaint.

She’s stubborn. She’s feisty. She’s bossy. She’s completely ridiculous.

And after Judge Judy, there was a big pair of shoes to fill.

Stella may run the farm a little differently than Judge Judy, but she’s doing a mighty fine job of carrying on that tradition of strong-willed ladies around here.

Meet Alice 🐓

Well, y’all… every flock needs a girl who keeps everybody guessing, and that girl is Alice.

Alice is our beautiful one year old Sapphire Gem girl, with those gorgeous smoky-blue feathers and that unmistakable little “I have opinions” expression. She may be pretty, but don’t let that face fool you—this girl has plenty of personality to go with those feathers!

Alice and her sister Stella have a little ongoing disagreement about one very important matter:

Who exactly is in charge? 👑

Alice can be a little grumpy, too. She has mastered the art of giving you the look when something doesn’t meet her very high standards.

But here’s the funny part…

Let another chicken get some attention from me and suddenly Miss Alice has somewhere she needs to be. 😏

She may act like she doesn’t need anybody, but the minute she sees somebody else getting pets, she gets jealous and comes over to make sure she hasn’t been forgotten.

She’s got plenty of attitude, a strong sense of her own importance, and just enough sweetness tucked underneath it all to melt you when she decides to show it.

Are y’all ready for another introduction!?!

Meet Aunt Bea 🐓🤩 the lady who seems to have appointed herself management around here.

She is fiesty with a capital F. She’s usually second in command… or third… depending on what kind of mood she wakes up in and who she’s willing to tolerate that day. Around Sweet Gum Farm, the pecking order is apparently subject to change without notice. 😂

Aunt Bea has plenty of opinions, and she is not the least bit shy about sharing them. She also likes to explore and doesn’t care if anybody is with her or not until she looks up and doesn’t see the flock 😳

But the moment she sees me?

OH, she knows exactly who I am.

I am The Treat Lady. 🥬🍎🍓🫐🌽🥚

And this girl can RUN. She takes off toward me like somebody just announced there’s a buffet on the other side of the pasture. Feet flying, feathers bouncing, dignity completely optional. 😂

She may have a little sass, a little attitude, and just enough bossiness to keep everybody else in line—but underneath all that personality is one very special girl who has made her own little place here at Sweet Gum Farm.
