When most people think of Drew Bledsoe, they recall his legendary NFL career as a star quarterback for the New England Patriots and other teams. However, since his retirement in 2007, Bledsoe has made an equally impressive mark in the world of wine with Doubleback Winery, a passion project that brings together his love of Walla Walla, Washington, and fine Cabernet Sauvignon.

Come see my full vertical review of Doubleback’s gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon and Estate Reserve wines. They are truly spectacular.

Catalyst Ridge Wines was founded in 2019 by Mark Zook and Jeff Russell with the purchase of Blossom Ridge Vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. With Joe Dobbes, a seasoned winemaker known for his meticulous attention to detail and expressive wines, at the helm, Catalyst Ridge has carved out a distinct identity. Their wines are crafted from a blend of vineyards that Dobbes also uses for his single-vineyard projects, bringing both familiarity and uniqueness to each bottle. Their portfolio includes a Pinot Noir from the Eola-Amity Hills AVA sourced from Orchard House Vineyard, Symonette, and Eola Springs, and a Chehalem Mountains AVA Pinot from Arlyn and Quailhurst vineyards.

CATALYST RIDGE WINES Pinot Noir, Chehalem Mountains 2021
The 2021 Catalyst Ridge Wines Pinot Noir from Chehalem Mountains pours a glimmering ruby-blue core with a light purple rim, aged in 35% new French oak. Aromas of forest herbs, sweet spice, and walnut shells merge with bright Bing cherries and Marionberries. On the palate, silky tannins and moderate acidity lead to a blue-fruit and spice-driven finish, making it an elegant yet expressive Pinot. Limited to just 125 cases.

Nysa Vineyard, established in 1990 by founder and winemaker Michael Mega, is situated in Oregon’s Dundee Hills. Mega’s journey into winemaking began during his college years, leading him to plant his first vines in the Dundee Hills after a four-year search for the ideal location. The estate has since become renowned for its meticulously cultivated Pinot Noir, which benefits from the region’s famed volcanic Jory soils and temperate climate. While not as widely known as some larger producers, Nysa prides itself on small-batch, estate-grown wines that express the elegance and complexity of the Dundee Hills terroir.

Nysa focses on producing wines that balance power and finesse, a characteristic of their signature Pinot Noir. The winemaking approach respects the vineyard’s unique elevation and microclimate, crafting wines with vibrant acidity and nuanced flavor profiles.

NYSA Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills ‘Leda Reserve’ 2019100% Pommard Clone fruit from the 1990 plantings and vinified with 40% whole cluster fruit, it spent a total of 24 months in 50% new French oak barrels before bottling. Sporting a light ruby-garnet core with a light blue rim, it gifts notes of sweet spiced red plums, sliced strawberries, red licorice, sweet cloves, dried red flowers, and a hint of forest herbs. Even after 5 years of aging, this is still a baby with grippy tannins, perfected levels of acidity, and a red-fruit and earth-driven finish that goes on for minutes. 124 cases made.
