Italian Trails x Maze Row: Brancaia

Ascending the forested hills of Chianti, your perception of time begins to change. Stone houses, unpaved roads, ancient trees — and limited cell coverage — offer a welcome invitation to disconnect from the demands of the digital age and reconnect with the landscape.

At .w**ery in Castellina in Chianti, we were greeted by owner and w**emaker Barbara Widmer. The estate itself is a study in Swiss precision: thoughtful, immaculate and purposeful, with not an inch of space wasted.

Barbara’s deep respect for biodiversity is absolute. In the vineyard, no grape is predetermined for a particular w**e. Instead, every parcel is raised with the potential to become a top bottling. Only after careful evaluation in the cellar are those decisions made and the final blends determined. Each vintage is another opportunity to listen to what nature has given her.

Our visit continued over bistecca fiorentina on the sunny terrace of the Osteria, joined by Lucia Borri, Barbara’s right hand for 24 years, and her son Nicolas, now part of the family business in the tasting room. And because a day in Castellina shouldn’t end too quickly, we finished with a stop at Bar Brancaia in the village.

Italian Trails x Maze Row: Allegrini

For our latest Italian Trails journey, we traveled to spend time with **ery, a singular name in Amarone and a founding member of Famiglie Storiche. Since 2009, the association has brought together historic Valpolicella producers around a shared commitment to Amarone, craftsmanship and their territory.

Our visit began in Verona, where Matteo Allegrini hosted us for dinner at the legendary Antica Bottega del Vino. It was a fitting introduction to the spirit of collaboration that runs through this region.

The next morning, Silvia Allegrini took us into the hills of Sant’Ambrogio, overlooking La Grola, La Poja and, in the distance, Lake Garda. In 1979, Giovanni Allegrini planted La Poja atop La Grola, recognizing the potential of this remarkable site for Corvina. Today, La Poja remains one of Allegrini’s icons and, alongside Fieramonte, became one of the first Allegrini w**es offered through La Place de Bordeaux.

But what stayed with us most was how firmly this next generation is looking forward. Matteo, Francesco, Giovanni and Silvia are carrying the family legacy into a new era, with a deep respect for the land and an ambition to preserve it for what comes next. We left energized by a family that understands what seven generations have built, while still asking what they can contribute to the eighth and beyond.

Italian Trails x Maze Row: Girlan

Today’s Italian Trails stop took us north to in Alto Adige, and there is a lot packed into this tiny high elevation w**e region.

We visited Mazon, where Girlan’s Trattmann Pinot Noir is grown. Unlike many famous Pinot Noir sites that face east, Mazon sits on a terrace with a west/northwest exposure, sheltered from the morning sun by Monte C***o. That unique site is part of the story behind a pretty extraordinary track record: 16 consecutive vintages of Trattmann Pinot Noir have earned Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso.

Alto Adige itself is fascinating. Signs are in both German and Italian, reflecting the region’s unique history and culture. Despite producing only about 0.8% of Italy’s w**e, it has become one of the country’s most notable w**e destinations.

Italian Trails x Maze Row: Pieropan

Harvest is happening in Soave, and we arrived just in time to see Garganega nearing its final days on the vine. At La Rocca, this late-ripening variety still has about another week to go.

The family **es has farmed Calvarino since the 1860s, and in 1971 Leonildo Pieropan became the first in Italy to put a vineyard site on the label of a white w**e with Calvarino. Today, Andrea and Dario carry that vision forward alongside their mother and a team of just 16 people exporting w**es to over 130 countries.

So much history, artistry and passion in one remarkable place.

Italian Trails x Maze Row: A Day with Ratti

Today’s stop on our Maze Row Italian Trail brought us to **ery in Barolo.

We headed up to the Serradenari vineyard, the highest-elevation site in all of Barolo, where we tasted every vintage Ratti has made from the site so far: 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. Four vintages, one vineyard, and a pretty incredible way to taste the story of a place over time. Ratti acquired a portion of the Serradenari Cru in 2017, with vines now around 35 years old.

Our favorite fact of the day? Napa is roughly seven times larger than Barolo, yet Barolo has around 1,200 w**eries compared with roughly 475–500 physical w**eries in Napa. A lot of w**e packed into these hills.

Harvest, Etna style.

A snapshot from this year's harvest at **e, where the vineyards climb the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily and volcanic soils help shape w**es with incredible freshness, minerality and sense of place.

A few fun facts from the vineyard and cellar:
Tornatore’s Etna Bianco is made from Carricante grown on terraced vineyards and harvested by hand, while Etna Rosso brings together Etna’s native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes.

The reds are known for their bright red-fruit character, savory edge and balanced tannins—a distinctly Etna expression.

We love a sparkling moment for Pere Ventura.

We’re thrilled to see featured in Robb Report’s roundup, “7 Outstanding Spanish Sparkling W**es to Drink Right Now.” W**e writers Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen selected the Pere Ventura 2018 vintage among seven standout Cavas, celebrating its beautiful balance of citrus blossom, white peach, apple and lemon zest.

'Pere Ventura grew up in a family that was involved in the w**e business for multiple generations, so when he started his eponymous w**ery, no one was surprised. He makes mouthwatering cava and is also a genius when it comes to bottle design and packaging, so a gift of his cava is always well received. His 2018 Gran Reserva has aromas of citrus blossom, focaccia, and white peach with flavors of Fuji apple, lemon zest, and jasmine flowers'.

A wonderful recognition for Pere Ventura and the generations of w**emaking tradition, craftsmanship and unmistakable style behind every bottle.
