LIOCO Wine Company

LIOCO Wine Company Producer of minimalist wines from Mendocino + Sonoma + Santa Cruz Europe was the inspiration, as were the more restrained California wines of the 1980’s.

LIOCO was conceived in the alley behind Spago Beverly Hills by wine director Kevin O’Connor and wine salesman Matt Licklider. The year was 2001 and the two colleagues, critical of the heavy-handed wines of the day, wondered if it were possible to make some local wines that favored nuance over sheer power. In 2005, relying on nothing more than their palates and their rolodexes, the two embarked on

a winemaking odyssey. Today the winery is owned and operated by the Licklider family. Husband/wife duo Matt and Sara Licklider and their small team produce the wines at a state-of-the-art winemaking cooperative in Santa Rosa. All of the fruit is purchased from family-owned vineyards spanning 200-miles and three counties (Santa Cruz, Sonoma, and Mendocino). The focus is on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Carignan from sites with older vines, interesting soil, and heritage clones. Sometimes the hunt for Pinot Noir uncovers other treasures like a coastal Syrah vineyard or a rare, mid-century planting of Valdiguie. Room is made for such discoveries. Welcome to our story,

Matt & Sara

OK world, are you ready for Mike ONeel?? 🌎 It’s with heavy hearts that we bid Mike a farewell as he heads off to Connecticut for art school. Mike is multi talented and if you’ve seen his museum quality work as a figurative artist you may wonder how the wine business got him for so long. The reality is Mike is equally gifted at wine and storytelling and hospitality, and his ability to weave those things together made him an irreplaceable member of the LIOCO team. During his 5-years with us, Mike became part of our family—a friend, collaborator, foxhole buddy, mentee, and a mentor to Sara sharing his gift as an art teacher. His always-astute inputs about the tasting room helped us refine our hospitality experience. He will forever be a part of the LIOCO fabric, and we will miss him dearly.🤍

Join us in wishing Mike a farewell in the comments below if you like, or stop by on Saturday for his last shift in the tasting room! We’re going to open some of Mike’s favorite wines to pour by the glass, spin his favorite records, and try not to cry too much. 😭
