Hafner Vineyard

Hafner Vineyard We are a small family winery in Alexander Valley near Healdsburg making Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec & Rosé. We are open by appointment.

We are three generations working together at the winery and are committed to remaining small and making high quality, value-priced wines. We achieve that by careful, hands-on managing of vineyard and winemaking. Parke Hafner has been our winemaker for all of our 31 harvests. A University of California, Davis graduate, he has worked at wineries in Napa Valley and France's Burgundy. Each year Parke

makes our wines only from grapes we grow here at the winery. In our caves, we age our wines longer than most other wineries and that gives them fuller aromas and softer bouquets. Scott Hafner, an alumnus of Louis M. Martini Winery and The Sharper Image, manages the sale of Hafner wine exclusively to our patrons and leading California Restaurants, but not to any stores. Friendly service that is swift, dependable and personal is our mantra. Call us and you'll often get a Hafner on the phone. Wine is meant to be enjoyed, adding pleasure to life, and that is our goal for the wines we make at Hafner Vineyard.

Over the past few weeks, we welcomed patrons to our Spring Barrel Tastings. These are one way we thank Annual Tasting Program patrons for being in the Program (wine club) or purchase a case of wine. We shared a selection of wines including a 2009 Library Cabernet Sauvignon which was a crowd pleaser. These gatherings are a highlight of our year, and we’re grateful to all who traveled from near and far to join us. Thank you for being part of our Hafner Vineyard Family.

If you weren’t able to join but would like to visit, we host tours and tastings normally on Friday. Feel free to email [email protected] or DM us. We’d love to have you join us!

We are always looking for ways to reduce our impact on the planet and lower our carbon footprint. Recently, we pulled a block of old Cabernet vines. Instead of burning them, which is a common industry practice, we chose to chip them into biomass.

We first tried this approach with the last block we removed and saw real benefits, but this time we improved the process even more. By using a forklift instead of a bulldozer, we were able to pull more of the roots while minimizing soil disruption. Part of the team now preps the vines and cuts off the cordons, while the rest loads them into the chipper to be repurposed as biomass.

We’re proud to continue moving toward cleaner, more sustainable farming practices for our vineyard and the environment.

Out in the vineyard, the team is moving row by row, section by section, adjusting trellis wires and tucking shoots as the vines grow. These small but important steps help with canopy management: improving airflow, sun exposure, and ultimately the quality of the fruit.

Ever wonder what a Vineyard Manager is actually thinking about in May? 👇
Dave’s got 3 things on his mind right now:
🌿 Bloom + fruit set. It’s one of the most critical moments of the year. Our Chardonnay has formed grapes, but the reds are still mid-bloom. We hold our breath a little every season.
💧Vine growth + irrigation. Too little water stunts the vines, too much affects quality. Timing is everything.
🚜 W**d control. Not glamorous but it’s a big job that takes many tractor passes.

The insectary rows are showing off with Poppies, Bachelor Buttons and Crimson Clover in full bloom. These flowers aren’t just beautiful; the goal is to attract beneficial insects and help support biodiversity throughout the vineyard. 🍃🐞🌸

The Summer Food Bank Garden is back! 🌱 A heartfelt thank you to and for donating the veggie starts that make this garden possible. What began as a “victory garden” in 2020 (a response to food insecurity during the pandemic) has since become permanent here at Hafner Vineyard. Every time a new season’s garden goes in, we’re reminded of why it matters: fresh produce for neighbors who need it most. We’re so grateful for and the vital work they do distributing our garden harvest to people in our community.

Last week, we bottled our 2025 Blanc de Blancs. Now begins the quiet, patient and hands off part of its journey. The wine will rest “en tirage” which means aging on the lees and going through a secondary fermentation to develop its fine bubbles and complexity, until we riddle and disgorge in Summer 2028.

It’s a long wait, but that time in bottle is important in the development of the wine, and necessary for the bubbles we all love.

Watch for its release in November 2028. Good things take time 🍾

There’s something special about Spring in Alexander Valley 🌿 The vines are waking up; cover crop and California poppies are blooming; days are getting longer… and our Reserve Chardonnay and Rosé have arrived just in time.
The Reserve is a labor of love: Burgundy inspired, 100% barrel-fermented, and aged in our caves for 17 months that give a balance of creaminess and flinty elegance.
The Rosé is Summer in a glass: made from Malbec grapes grown steps from our winery, delivering watermelon and rose petal notes that are as bright as the season itself.
If you haven’t tried it, order here: www.hafnervineyard.com/shop/
Thanks to many Annual Tasting Program patrons who have already received theirs. Cheers to Springtime!

Out in the vineyard, Cabernet is getting ready for its next big moment. The inflorescences have formed; these are the tiny clusters that will soon flower and eventually become grapes.
These vines come from our Kellogg Block (named for the former owner), a favorite of Winemaker Parke Hafner. He values this site for its clone, the maturity of the vines (about 25 years old), and its rocky, well-draining soils.
In the coming weeks, we’ll begin to see these delicate clusters bloom and, with a little luck from the weather, start their transformation into this year’s Cabernet grapes.
