Many of our growers are up against Mother Nature once again, and it’s happening in vineyards throughout Sonoma County.

It’s called shatter—when grape flowers don’t fully develop into berries, causing some of the tiny developing grapes to fall from the cluster. The result is looser clusters, fewer berries and, in more severe cases, reduced yields at harvest.

Here’s Jim Rickards of J. Rickards W**ery in Alexander Valley talking about what he’s seeing in his own vineyards this season.

Jim has spent decades farming Alexander Valley, including vineyards with vines more than 100 years old. He’s a farmer who deeply loves the land, makes the most of what Mother Nature gives him each vintage, and believes in educating people about what’s really happening in the vineyard and across the w**e industry.

Every vintage tells a different story, and this year, shatter is part of it.

Recent news headlines state “California w**e industry is hurting so badly, they are burning their vineyards”

That’s not true.
Burn piles are common farming practice, it’s a way all farmers get rid of waste, it’s been common practice for MANY years.

The w**e industry is shifting, things changed and growers are ripping out vineyards for various reasons:
It’s smart to do mass replanting in a down market because it takes 3-5 years for a healthy crop.
Cost savings, and replanting to another varietal.
Farming practices are different now than they were 25+ years ago, some farmers are replanting to make better use of the space.

Don’t listen to click bait headlines, the w**e countries in California has many reasons to visit- many w**eries are part of historic landmark sites, have rich history, beautiful grounds, stunning views, and great w**es.

Visit family owned w**eries this season, don’t let news headlines scare you away! 🍇

🍷 W**e 101: What's an AVA?

You've probably seen "Alexander Valley AVA" on a w**e label—but what does it actually mean?

AVA stands for American Viticultural Area, a federally recognized w**e-growing region with unique geography, climate, elevation, and soils.
Alexander Valley became an official AVA in 1984 and is known for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and other Bordeaux varietals.

When you see "Alexander Valley" on a bottle, you're tasting a w**e that reflects the character of this remarkable place.

🍇 Have you spotted veraison yet?

One of the most exciting moments of the growing season is happening throughout Alexander Valley.

Veraison is when w**e grapes begin changing color as they ripen. Green berries transform into beautiful shades of purple, red, and deep blue, marking the beginning of the final stretch before harvest.

Over the next several weeks, the vineyards throughout Alexander Valley will continue changing daily as growers prepare for one of the busiest times of the year.
If you're visiting Sonoma County, keep an eye on the vines—you might catch this incredible transformation in person.
