We've been quiet here because we've been so busy in the field, but we had to say something for National Farmers Day. To all our colleagues, neighbors, friends, family, and kindred spirits- regardless of the field we're in, we're on the same team. Here's to all the hard work, long days, curveballs, and weather we all handle. Cheers to farmers everywhere!

Hey guess what? We started harvest last Saturday! So far, we've run our machine harvester with good success. Early mornings have happened already, but it's worth it with views like this. Hand picks start this weekend, and from there on, we're right into the thick of things! We'll try to keep you updated with how things are and what we are up to, but our socials may end up being another harvest widow in our lives.

It's been awhile, but we're back! (I mean literally, since we all take time off in August.) It's probably not surprising but we're still busy as can be, with the added task of prepping for our imminent harvest. Some of our neighbors have already started, and looking at our sites we may not be far behind. Last week we started testing brix in our earlier varieties and blocks picked for champagne. I don't think I've ever used the refractometer (that little device in the picture) in August before, but the weather has given us no choice but to be on our toes. Good luck to all our colleagues and fingers crossed for a good vintage!

Scouting is one of the most important jobs we do. Even with constant research and advances in technology, our eyes are still some of the best tools we have. Our crew walks through every variety at every site we manage, increasing the frequency as we get closer to harvest. We check where the vines are in their growing cycle, along with looking for signs of disease, virus, pest damage, soil conditions, and the impact from current weather. The more we scout, the more we get to know our sites and are able to spot trends and their unique characteristics. It can be tedious, but it pays off.

It's official- we've seen the start of veraison in three varieties today. This change in the grapes marks the change from the berries growing to them beginning to ripen. To us, it's a sign of our race towards harvest. The start of veraison is a little earlier than usual this year, but we've seen early maturation in everything from garlic to peaches this year, so maybe we shouldn't have been as surprised as we were to find this!

Whenever I'm gathering samples for crop estimates, I'm always struck by how unique the clusters are on each variety. Berry shape, size, closeness, and color can vary wildly between different varieties (and clones). We work closely with a wide range of cultivars, it's a unique opportunity to see how each one progresses and develops each season (then again, we're kind of nerds about grapes 😜).

Had some surprise company while out scouting today. Luckily this little one was more curious about looking at me and eating grass than it was about eating riesling shoots!

One important behind-the-scenes job we're starting right now is crop estimates. In each separate block, we take data on the number of clusters and their weight at different points in their development. We use this in coordination with historical information to give us an idea of what sort of crop load to expect. This also helps our clients and anyone working with the fruit properly prep and plan everything from their processing to eventual bottling amounts.

We know we've been pretty quiet on here. It's not from lack of things to talk about, it's from lack of time! This point of our growing season is one of our busiest times of year. Between the growth, weather, and physiological stages the vines are going through, we're doing multiple different tasks every day to ensure that all our sites are healthy and maintained.

This week alone, we've had crews shoot positioning, shoot thinning, and cluster thinning. Our team has been managing weeds, maintaining our spray program, scouting, mowing, hedging, and doing regular upkeep and improvements on all our equipment. Add in the logistics of assigning and transporting equipment to different sites and trying to predict the weather, we end up with a lot on our plates!

In the next few weeks, we'll catch you up on more specifics on these tasks and why they're so important for what we do. (AKA, why we let them drive us crazy sometimes). At least we get to enjoy views like this while we're at it.

Checking in on the babies we put in a few weeks back... I think they'll be happy here.
