100% Chocolate Alegría
Chocolate Alegría is grown on “La Alegría,” a small organic farm in northwest Ecuador. The harvested cacao beans, called “fino de aroma” and considered to be the highest quality in the world, are processed into chocolate right there on the farm. While most commercial chocolate contains 50% to 75% cacao, Chocolate Alegría is 100% cacao – no sugar, no preservatives, just pure
chocolate! Chocolate comes from the seeds of the tropical cacao tree. The seeds grow in football-sized pods, often pumpkin-colored when ripe. Removed from the pod, the seeds are fermented in a wooden box and then sun-dried on wooden platforms. The cacao seeds (beans) are then roasted, shelled, and ground, all by hand – no
electricity involved! Finally, the thick warm chocolate paste is molded into balls and cooled, creating the entirely hand-made finished product. The Chocolate Alegría Partnership
Once a barren cattle pasture, “La Alegria” has become a lush, tropical food forest. Cacao trees are interplanted with bananas, plantains, avocado, guaba, and other tropical fruits. The owner, Sharon, her son and daughter-in-law share the farm with the Rios family – Eugenio, Claudia, and their three young boys. Proceeds from the sales go to the Rios family, providing them with significantly more income than they would make selling the beans to commercial operations. “Alegria” means “joy” in Spanish, and joy is an important an element in our partnership. It is with great joy that we bring you our organic, 100% cacao, direct trade “Chocolate Alegria!”
