Weinerschnitzel has the best soft serve…

Change my mind.

I used to live in Flint, Michigan.

While Flint may not have the best reputation (thank you “Most Dangerous Cities To Live In” op-ed) it does have its charms. I will forever love parts of Flint and it will always have a piece of my heart.

One of the best things Flint had to offer was “The Original Angelo’s. ‘Have You Had 2 Lately?’” on the corner of N. Franklin and Davidson on the Eastside (sadly they closed it down in 2018). I lived right up the street from there on Cronk Avenue, just a 10 minute walk away.

At any time of the day or night, you could get a coney dog with their special “dry chili” sauce or a cheeseburger fried up and smothered in mayo and mustard (hold all the veggies).

If you were looking for a nice family themed restaurant, you were most definately in the wrong place. I don’t even think they had a grade in the window. If they did, it was covered in grease and dust thicker than my thighs. If you didn’t see a sticky fly trap hanging from the ceiling in the corner, were you really there?

One time we ordered a meal and there was a bug in the fries. The waitress told us she would have to charge extra for the protein. We didn’t get a new order of fries, we just took the fry that had the bug on it out, and continued to eat them because you don’t stir up trouble at Angelo’s. (This was also 1999/2000 and things were just different then.)

When I wanted a cheeseburger (mustard and mayo only please). I would go to Angelo’s. There was just something about the way that cheeseburger hit. It wasn’t greasy, surprisingly. It kind of reminded me of the cheeseburgers moms would make at home. It was simple, nothing fancy but boy did it taste so good.

Nothing, in my experience has ever come close in taste. Until the other day. My boss treated me to a cheeseburger from none other than Big Daddy's Famous East Coast Cheese Steaks.

Now mind you, I am not comparing the atmosphere of Angelo’s to Big Daddy’s. Angelo’s was an experience like none other and while it may not sound like it would be a great dinning experience to you, I can assure you that it was. Sometimes those “hole in the wall” diners are the best around.

Back to the point… until that Angelo’s cheeseburger, I had not experienced a cheeseburger quite like it until I had one from Big Daddy’s.

One bite, and I looked at my boss and said “ohhh this reminds me of the hole in the wall place I used to go to. This is so good.” A simple cheeseburger (mustard and mayo please, but I’ve grown since then so I added lettuce and tomatoes).

It took me back to the days when my friend group and I would hit Angelo’s at 2 am before we had to get to work at 7 am (those were the days.) A freshly made juicy cheeseburger, melted cheese, the right amount of mustard and mayo, crispy lettuce and a perfectly ripened tomato.

It wasn’t a gourmet burger, so don’t go in expecting that. It was a 5 dollar and some change burger that took me back 20 some years, and every bite was better than the last.

I love Big Daddy’s cheesesteak sandwiches, but this cheeseburger just won a place in my heart. And when I’m feeling nostalgic and miss my Flint days, you know where you’ll find me.

Stop by and try one! Let them know they have a fan who wrote a nice little blog about them.

(Sorry no picture, I scarfed it down. Anyway, you all know I suck at picture taking. Writing is my forte, not taking pictures lol).

This is a little different review… but I just HAVE to share this experience with you!

My friend Ricardo Ruelas over at IE_5 Star Detailing came through for me.

This video is the after…
I will post the before in the comments… it was bad… and if you know me, then you know most of my things will inevitably be covered in coffee. I can’t help it… I’ve got little hands and I always order big coffees 🤷🏻‍♀️

I asked him for a basic maintenance, but he went way above and beyond. He got rid of a coffee spill on one of my seats, my mom spilled rice all over the floor on the passenger side, dog hair, more coffee splashes on the door, and a little sprinkle of more coffee in the backseat… I think you get it.

The outside wasn’t any better… but I can proudly say, I did NOT spill coffee on the outside, it was mostly bugs and bug poo. He washed then WAXED my car! It’s so clean and shiny like a new toy!!

I do not trust anyone else with my car. He has always been and will always be, the only one to detail it. Not only because he is good, but because he has integrity. He takes pride in his work, and it shows.

I have known him to hire people to come help him, people who were down and out and needed work. He gave them a job, a purpose. He taught them skills they could use for future employment.

Ricardo is an owner of a small business I will gladly support. It’s businesses like his, the backbone of our community, that give me a sense of pride in my small town.

I cannot promise you that I won’t be spilling coffee in my car again, but I CAN promise you, that when I do, I will be calling Ricardo!

Don’t Blink!

Taqueria Azteca

Wednesday: Closed
Thursday & Friday: 10 AM to 8 PM
Saturday: 9 AM to 8 PM
Sunday: 9 AM to 2 PM

Between $10-$20 per person

Sometimes the term “hole in the wall” can mean something less than appealing. However, when I use the term here, I mean it in the best way possible. If you blink you just might miss this Taqueria, nestled in between businesses on Main Street in San Jacinto. So don’t blink!

When you first walk in, you are usually greeted by the owner, if there isn’t a line to the door. There’s a very cozy feel to the place. If you didn’t know the people who are sitting behind you, by the end of your meal you probably will.

I love coming here, it’s warm and inviting. It’s clean and organized, the menu is small and simple. All the things I appreciate in a good restaurant. It’s about quality, not quantity.

We lovingly call it “Crunchy Tacos” because you won’t find a better crunchy taco in this town.

Every dish I’ve gotten here has been full of flavor and consistently good. On this visit, I opted for the carne asada nachos and bean and cheese burrito. (Because I am on the hunt for the best bean and cheese burrito in town.)

The carne asada nachos were so good.

I will start with the carne asada. The meat was tender, never a bite where I felt like I was chewing meat gum (you know exactly what I am talking about). Every bite had flavor, never bland, but seasoned. The portions she gave were generous, every bite had carne asada on it. Next was the Pico de Gallo, made fresh daily, topped with shredded cheese, crema, and homemade guacamole (unfortunately I was not able to eat the guacamole. I’m allergic to avocados but it sure looked good!) The final touch was the chips.

I judge certain restaurants on items I feel like they should be good at making. If it’s Chinese, they better have good Crab Cheese Rangoon. If it’s Italian, good sauce. For Mexican, it’s about the chips and salsa. A crunchy, lightly salted chip with freshly made spicy and mild salsa.

I am never disappointed with the chips and salsa here. The chips are so light and crispy. They are the best tortilla chips I think I’ve ever had. They are fried perfectly and NEVER greasy. The owner takes pride in her cooking and makes sure that the grease she uses is changed out frequently. Once it’s smoking, it’s out. I’m sure you’ve been to plenty of places where the oil tastes old, burnt or stale. I can promise you, that has never been the case here. The picture can speak for itself.

The other item I ordered was the bean and cheese burrito. While I am on the hunt for the perfect bean and cheese burrito, I will have to say the bar has been set pretty high off the bat. I am not an expert in Mexican cuisine, but I know what I like. This bean and cheese burrito was the fire for sure.

The perfect ratio of bean to cheese. I know she makes her beans from scratch, and you can tell this did NOT come out of a can. I've had refried beans where they were kinda crunchy, if that makes sense. The beans in this burrito were smooth... it was almost like silk. My favorite thing to do with a bean and cheese burrito is to pull it apart from the middle and watch the cheese pull, and this burrito did not disappoint.

Other items to try are:
Taquitos
Crunchy Potato Taco (but add the guacamole to it, for more flavor)
Rice
Birria. I like to add ramen noodles to the birria consume the next day and it is next level.

I didn’t just taste food made from scratch; I tasted the love she pours into each dish. I promise, if you give this place a try, you will too.

Sunday - Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a review… but I’m back babyyy

What an experience! I was so excited to hear we have an Indian restaurant in town. I could not WAIT to eat here. I got my group together and off we went!

This review is my flavor experience… I’m not a professional food reviewer, nor do I play one in real life. I just like foods.

First I should remind you all, my pictures always stink. I have a decent camera on my phone, but I don’t know how to use it right, or at all. So I promise, it’s much better in person, please do not judge the food based on my very blurry, bewildered photos.

And so we begin…

I have honestly never met a nicer waiter and manager/owner. Our waiter was a young man who got everything right, was eager to help out and very friendly. If he didn’t know, he was quick to find the answer. One of my mates is highly allergic to tomatoes, and our waiter went above and beyond to make sure she knew what was in each menu option, steering her towards the section she could safely order from.

I do not have a very experienced palate… there are so many things I have yet to try. One of those were samosas. So of course I immediately put an order in for some.

Vegetable Samosas are a crisp, light and crunchy pastry, filled with potatoes, peas and spices. It came with a green minty sauce and a sweet red sauce. All it took was one bite. One bite and samosas will now forever be one of my most favorite ways of delivering potato to my mouth.

I am not familiar with all the spices used, but more please. I didn’t really like the mint sauce (only because I’m not a huge mint in my food fan) but that sweet red sauce was the fire! 🔥

One friend ordered the Everest Vegetarian Mixed Appetizer Platter, which came with vegetable pakoras, vegetable samosa and Panner pakora with a mint chutney. I tried the Vegetable Pakora. The best way to describe the vegetable pakora is to compare it to a fritter. It was so light and crunchy. There seemed to be green peppers, onions and I think some cauliflower fried in chickpea batter. The flavor of onions, and spices literally smacked me in the face, and I wanted another smack!

I came here for one thing, and one thing only. Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic naan.

The Chicken Tikka Masala was made with a creamy tomato sauce, huge chunks of chicken breast marinated in cumin, tumeric and coriander, with onions, and cream. One bite, and it was like someone turned the light on in my tastebuds. Every part of my mouth came alive with the sweetness of the tomatoes, the nuttiness of the cumin rounded out with the richness of the cream. A perfect melodic dance of savory with a hint of sweet.

The only thing that made this dish even better, was dipping my garlic naan bread in the sauce. I can’t even begin to tell you how good this was (well, I guess I should tell you since that’s the whole point of this.) The garlic naan bread was fluffy in texture, brushed with garlic butter. Imagine a thick homemade tortilla, freshly made, with butter melting on top. That’s the best way I can describe this garlic naan. (To be clear though, tortillas and naan are made quite differently, but they are comparable.)

I took a bite of Lisa’s Eggplant dish called Baingain Bharta made with cilantro, tomatoes, onions and cream. I’ve never tasted anything like it. I could definately taste the cilantro, it was so unique. I’m used to cilantro in my food, but not like this. The dish is described as smokey in flavor and I would have to agree. But not overpowering, it was very subtle. If you like eggplant and cilantro, I highly recommend this dish, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The other dishes will be listed in the photos.

Overall, I will definately be making this my go-to place. Everything about this experience was a 10/10.

The prices were very reasonable, in a world where everything is unreal. I felt like I didn’t overpay for anything and I left VERY full.

I do hope you give them a chance. And if there’s something you didn’t like, let them know right away! They want to fix it, and we want to encourage small businesses to flourish here.

Thanks for reading this, gah I’m so wordy… there’s so many words!

Diana’s Bites… bitting Four Seasons Asian Buffet

Four Seasons
On the corner of Menlo and San Jacinto
Open Monday thru Sunday 11:00am - 9:30pm

We went there with zero expectations and came out planning our next trip back.

First off, the place was VERY clean. It still looks the same as the previous Asian buffet, but it was noticeably cleaner. From the tables and chairs, to the actual buffet, everything was quite clean.

I have a couple of videos filming a few rows, but I had to film quickly as I didn’t want to get in anyone’s way. People were hangry, including me.

I went for the typical Chinese food choices. White rice, sweet and sour chicken, spicy chicken, chow mein noodles, cheese wontons, ribs with sweet and sour sauce, Chinese donuts and a couple of crab legs.

The sweet and sour chicken was crispy and not too sweet. I don’t know about you, but I hate overly sweet sweet and sour chicken that’s soggy 😞. Thankfully, their chicken was crispy and every bite had a light crunch with just the right sweet and sour combination.

The spicy chicken had a great flavor, but could have been a little crispier. I do like my chicken with a little sass. I tried to give it a second chance, but it was all gone when I went back up… which tells me, this is probably a crowd favorite. Big slices of jalapeños and onions, I can see why everyone liked it. Just maybe a little crispier, for me.

The chow mein noodles had such an interesting taste to them, but a little too soft. I’m also an Al dente noodle person, though… so if you like your noodles on the softer side, then you’ll love these. The flavor was unique, I’d say maybe there was some cumin in there? Whatever it was, made it taste a little different than any other chow mein noodle I’ve ever had and I’m here for it. I definitely got a second helping of that… I just would have preferred a harder noodle.

The sweet and sour ribs… those are my favorite and I will always add a couple to my plate when I see them. They reminded me of the ribs from Kim’s Pagoda (if you know, you know). These were a little on the lean side, but there was a mountain of them, so I could have had ten, if I really wanted to. Aside from that, they were tasty, sticky (like they should be) and sweet and tangy. Never skip the ribs if you can help it.

Next was the crab. To be honest, I don’t even know why I grabbed them. Don’t get me wrong… I love crabs. It’s embarrassing how much I love them… but there’s only one person who can make them the way I like them, and she was eating lunch with me. I will say, they were perfectly cooked, so I gave them to my mom who proceeded to appreciate their perfection. The waitress even brought us one of those nut cracking tools to crack the legs.

Last to enjoy, were the cheese wontons and Chinese donuts. I mean, come on. Cheese and donuts? I would never stoop so low as to insult the beauty of cheese and donuts. The wontons were yummm. Mass produced, so not as crispy as I like them, but they weren’t bad at all. Them donuts though…. Oh man so FLUFFY!!! I won’t tell you how many I had because that’s embarrassing.

My mom enjoyed a very different section of the buffet. I am not a true seafood person, she is. So I will tell you how she liked hers.

My mother, is the pickiest eater in all of the land. (Friend D if you’re following along). She rarely likes anything except for the three things she likes lol. But today, she truly enjoyed her choices. She had the baked salmon, baked clams and muscles and the vegetarian sushi.

She said the salmon had a great taste and was NOT fishy smelling or tasting (that’s a good sign). She enjoyed the baked clams and muscles. They weren’t overly chewy like some can be. She didn’t particularly enjoy the vegetarian sushi because of the seaweed salad they added to it. It kind of threw her off… not the best combination. But the sushi did look fresh.

Side note, she had the kimchi. Usually, when Chinese buffets have kimchi, it’s very low quality kimchi. However, my mom said the kimchi was so good, she would come back just for that. Someone there knows their kimchi!

Overall, we were very happy with this visit. I want this place to succeed and hope they continue down this road.

I would give this place an 8/10 and will definitely be back…. Probably this week lol

I’m here at the new buffett Four Seasons. About to try this place out and give you my honest, but positive review…

Pictures and probably a long wordy review to follow. 🙂

Pho Shack

Dine in, take out, delivery
Hours are: Monday - Sunday 11:00 am - 9:00 pm

Right in the Stater Bros shopping plaza in Valle Vista, easy access, lots of parking close by with minimal walking to the restaurant.

The restaurant is spacious, and clean. Lots of room for big groups of people or an intimate evening out with your favorite person.

Staff were very attentive, friendly and quick to help. Since it was our first time, they explained the menu and let us know about the seafood special (Buy 2 lbs get 1 free)… friend C took advantage of this offer!

Right when we got there, customers told us as they were leaving to make sure we were hungry as their portions were large and filling, and they weren’t lying!

Let’s start off with our appetizer, Cajun Chicken Wings. These were so good. Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. Each bite was a crispy full flavor mouth party. Really… a mouth party. I love wings, even though they are mini, you get a lot of them and don’t feel bad for eating so many because, they are mini. Anyway, these are the best wings I’ve had anywhere so far. You heard me... ANYWHERE.

Next up was the Fried Pork Buns. I was not sure what to expect. I mean, the words fried and pork go well together, but would it taste good? Ohhh my friend. I know it’s my job to describe to you what this tastes like… but like most of my relationships… it’s complicated. The inside was so tender and flavorful. The crispy outer bun against the tender seasoned pork, was the perfect compliment to each other. Garlic, onions, pork, ginger…I mean come on.

Beef BBQ Short Ribs was my meal. I ordered this dish because it reminded me of one of my favorite Korean BBQ dishes called Kalbi. This was very close to it. I would describe it as almost like teriyaki beef, but not as sweet. The meat was tender, I didn’t have to fight with the bones to get the meat off… and it wasn’t chewy like meat gum. You know what I’m talking about when I say meat gum.

The rice was cooked perfectly. You would be surprised about rice. I can’t tell you how often I’ve been somewhere and the rice was horrible. You would think it was easy to cook, but you’d be surprised. It’s not so simple, there is a sweet spot between rice and water ratio… I’d have to show you on my hand.

Friend B got the Seafood Pho. She was very pleased with this dish. It was A LOT of food in a huge bowl! Plenty of seafood in the soup, the broth was good. I will have to take her word for it, I am NOT a fan of pho so I didn’t try it. But she’s picky, so if she says it’s good, I promise, it’s good.

Friend C and C3 got the seafood boil. I did not hear a lot of talking on that side of the table… just a lot of mmm, and hummm. I will say that when you order, they give you the option of picking how spicy you want your meal. If you don’t want to spend the night in the bathroom, I’d suggest getting the very mild. You know who you are.

They bring your seafood out in a big bag with paper towels, a table trash can and extra plates… the rest is up to you. I believe the sauce they use is made with chili oil and WILL punch you in the face if you’re not careful.

I added the shrimp fried rice and sesame balls that my mom and I ordered the next day.

Shrimp Fried rice was a 4 out of 5. I would have given them a higher mark, but there could have been a little more shrimp in the dish. The flavor was good, not greasy, and the rice was cooked perfect.

Seasame balls… I don’t get it. My mom loves them, my friend Laurie loves them. They are weird to me… but if you’re willing to try new things, I’d say give these a try. They are light and crispy with sweet bean paste in the middle. You’ll probably like them.

Overall we really enjoyed our experience there. I plan to go back often, as they have the best wings and shrimp fried rice in town. And the prices are actually quite fair, considering how much you get!

Try them out and let me know how you liked it. I’m very curious about their snow crab… if you’re feeling crabby, give it a try and let me know!
