Guinea fowl aren't the brightest of creatures, but boy do we love them here on the farm. We started with 17 a year ago. We were down to 5, plus 2 of the 3 that we hatched in the incubator before all our females perished. They were not able to keep up with the bug population, so we got 17 more. This time, we went with lavender instead of pearls. They are just the cutest little balls of gray fluff!

There seem to be two camps on whether or not you can consider Guinea hens to be "good moms" or not. They will sometimes go broody and sit on their eggs in a hidden nest for the full 26-28 days, only leaving a couple of times a day to eat and will fiercely protect the nest, if found by a predator. Good mom, right? Then take her keets across a damp field, getting them wet, causing them to chill & die. Oops! As we haven't experienced this phenomenon yet, I'm not sure which camp we're in. They are also NOT the brightest birds. HOWEVER, we may have one hen who is using her noggin. We're finding that she is laying her eggs in our goose's nest daily. Maybe she thinks all those eggs are hers. Maybe she thinks Natasha will hatch them for her, saving her the trouble of having to sit. We're not entirely sure how this is going to play out as Natasha is also a first time mom, and should already have gone broody, in my opinion. We swiped five Guinea eggs for the incubator this week. We're just going to wait & see on the rest....

Our hay field

We are a brand-new, family-owned farm and ranch with big dreams. Currently, we have cattle, horses, geese, guinea fowl, and Japanese coturnix quail. We will be selling quail eggs very soon! Chickens and turkeys are also in the plan, along with fruit and nut trees. We will be planting a lot of vegetables for our family, but as we grow, there will undoubtedly be excess for sale. We plan to build a small roadside store at the front of the property to sell our eggs and other products from. We are also looking at local farmer’s markets as potential contact points. Looking for something specific? Please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
