đŸ„– I need your sourdough brains! đŸ„–

My daughter’s 6th grade cooking class has invited me to come teach them about sourdough, and I’m SO excited!

I have some ideas for making it hands-on and fun—starter, dough, fermentation, maybe a little sourdough science—but I’d love to hear from all of you!

If you were teaching a room full of 6th graders about sourdough, what would you absolutely include?

What would have made you excited about sourdough at that age? What should I bring? Any fun demonstrations, activities, experiments, or “wow!” moments you think they’d love?

Throw your ideas at me! 👇 I may steal your best ones!

Is your starter taking FOREVER to double?

If you’re new to sourdough, this can be one of the most frustrating parts. You feed it, wait
and wait
and wonder if you’re doing something wrong.

One thing I’ve learned is that the calendar isn’t nearly as important as what your starter is actually doing. Temperature, flour, feeding ratio and timing can all make a difference.

If your starter is rising—even if it’s not doubling yet—that’s information! Don’t give up on it.

What day is your starter on, and how much is it rising? Tell me below.

👇 I’d love to see where everyone is in their starter journey!

Labor Day weekend always feels like the little line in the sand between summer and fall to me.

So for all my cottage bakers and home bakers — I want to know:

What’s IN and what’s OUT on your fall menu?

🎃 Pumpkin
🍎 Apple
🍁 Maple
đŸ€Ž Cinnamon & warm spices
đŸȘ Cozy cookies
đŸ„§ Pies & cobblers

And what summer favorites are you ready to retire for a while?

I’m especially curious about this one from the business side — what are customers asking for as the seasons change? Are you bringing back old favorites or trying something completely new?

Tell me what’s IN and what’s OUT on your menu! 👇

Today’s Cottage Baker Tip

If you’re selling your baked goods, start tracking your expenses from DAY ONE.

And I mean everything—flour, packaging, labels, market fees, equipment, mileage, website costs, even those little Amazon purchases that seem insignificant. They add up FAST. 😅

One of the biggest things I wish I had done earlier was create a system for keeping my business and personal expenses separate.

You don’t have to have a fancy accounting system when you’re starting out. You just need a system you’ll actually use consistently.

Cottage bakers: what’s one business expense you were surprised by when you started selling? 👇

Building a cottage bakery is about so much more than the bread—and that’s exactly why I’m creating resources for it through The Weekly Rise.

Cottage bakers, this one is for YOU!

I’ve been working behind the scenes on the next issue of The Weekly Rise, and this issue is being created specifically with cottage bakers and small baking businesses in mind.

We’re talking about the things that come up when you go from “I love baking” to “I’m actually selling what I bake!” — organization, supplies, labeling, pricing, resources, and some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

If you’re a new cottage baker, thinking about starting, or already selling at markets and events, I think you’re going to want this one.

The Weekly Rise is free, and I’d love to have you join us before this issue comes out!

One thing I wish I had done from the beginning as a cottage baker

Keep my business purchases separate from my personal shopping.

Once you start buying labels, packaging, equipment, shipping supplies, ingredients, and all the other little things a cottage bakery needs, it can get surprisingly difficult to keep track of what you’re spending on the business.

I started using Amazon Business for my Clear Creek Sourdough purchases, and I really like having a separate place for my business shopping.

So I put together a quick page explaining why I use it, what I use it for, and why I think it can be useful for other cottage bakers.

And the best part? The account is free to create.

If you’re just starting your cottage bakery, this is one of those little organizational things that can save you headaches later.

Cottage bakers — this little thing has been a GAME CHANGER for me.

I keep getting questions about my product and ingredient labels, so I figured I’d share the printer I actually use.

I use a MUNBYN Bluetooth thermal label printer and I LOVE being able to print my labels at home as I need them. No ink, no ordering hundreds of labels every time I add a product, and I can print everything from ingredient labels to QR codes.

It has been especially helpful as Clear Creek has grown and I’ve added different products and packaging sizes.

If you’re starting a cottage bakery or just tired of fighting with labels, this is one piece of equipment I’d definitely consider.

The link is in the comments!

And if you’re new here because of the cottage-baker community—welcome! I’m sharing the things I’m actually using and learning as I build my own little cottage business, so stick around!
