So, Oklahoma it's going to get cold, really cold. Now is the time you can blanket your horses! Trust me, you will get through it.

To keep them healthy over the next few days:
1. Keep the water open. They need to have a source of unfrozen water. Check all heaters and extension cords for safety. If there is any discharge of electricity they will not drink.

2. Lukewarm is better! If there is any way to provide tepid (not ice cold water) that will encourage drinking. Containers with lids are very helpful to haul water.

3. Maximize your hay intake. Don't worry if you waste some, we want to maximize the heat produced from hay digestion.

4. If you do blanket - please check them every day! Tangled leg straps or ripped blankets can get them in trouble quickly!

5. Monitor their behavior. Yes it is cold out, but bundle up and check on them. Look for a horse that hasn't moved from where they have been, check for dehydration and any change in eating patterns.

6. Fill your water tanks now! If houses or hydrants may be an issue, fill those tanks now. Or plan on how you will transport water from the house:)

7. Do not skip regular feedings or care. You get to go in a warm up later! Or take a buddy to keep on eye on you too.
