A hummingbird weighs about as much as a nickel, and every spring, some of them cross hundreds of miles of open water to get back to a yard exactly like yours.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds are one of the species known to make this nonstop crossing, flying for many hours on nothing but the fat reserves they built up beforehand. There is no rest stop over open water. They either make it or they do not, and most of them do, arriving exhausted and immediately in need of fuel.
That is part of why a hummingbird defends a feeder so fiercely once it finds one it trusts. For a bird this small, with a metabolism this fast, every flower and every feeder in its territory is the difference between having enough and not. What looks like tiny, aggressive posturing at a feeder is really a matter of real stakes for a bird that has already survived an extraordinary journey to get there.
If you keep a feeder, a little consistency goes further than you might expect. Clean, fresh sugar water, changed every few days in warm weather, gives a returning bird a reliable reason to keep coming back to the exact same spot year after year.
Refill your feeder this week if it has been a while.
