Laine Organic Farms: Built on Trust, Grown from the Ground Up
HEREFORD, AZ - Lloyd and Terrie Trachtenberg, owners of Laine Organic Farms, have spent more than a decade building a fully self-sustaining, certified organic operation rooted in transparency and hard work.
The farm is certified through CCOF out of California in coordination with USDA standards, requiring annual inspections as well as the possibility of unannounced visits. Every product grown and sold on the farm meets strict organic guidelines, with no use of chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, or artificial inputs.
The Trachtenbergs produce their own seeds, breed their own livestock, and create natural fertilizers using manure from animals raised on-site. Their philosophy is simple: nothing is sold that they would not personally consume.
The farm has been in operation for nearly 12 years, with certification achieved in the past five years due to the high costs and rigorous requirements involved. Today, the property includes 28 acres in production along with a 3,000-square-foot greenhouse used for seed starting and crop development.
Products include seasonal vegetables, garlic, eggs, pork, and beef, all processed and packaged on-site. The farm specializes in Irish Dexter cattle, known for their smaller size and high-quality meat, as well as American Guinea hogs, a heritage breed with roots dating back to early Spanish influence in the Americas.
In addition to serving local customers, Laine Organic Farms has participated in unique agricultural collaborations. For several years, the farm worked with a developer from Tel Aviv, growing specialized garlic varieties due to similar geographic conditions.
While international efforts have slowed, the farm continues to be recognized for its growing expertise. Customers travel from across the region, including Douglas and Wilcox, to purchase directly from the farm.
Rather than participating in farmers markets, the Trachtenbergs focus on a direct-to-consumer model, allowing for better efficiency and the ability to offer custom cuts of beef and pork.
The farm also supplies food to local professionals, including members of the medical community, as well as area restaurants seeking high-quality, locally produced ingredients.
Both Lloyd and Terrie bring decades of professional experience to their work, with backgrounds in psychology and orthopedic medicine. Their experiences have shaped a strong commitment to food quality and transparency.
Despite ongoing challenges such as high operating costs, labor shortages, and the physical demands of farming, Laine Organic Farms continues to grow through dedication and self-reliance. Everything on the farm has been built without outside funding, reflecting years of personal investment and effort.
