Every year after lambing season is over we have a few ewes who will go to the sale barn due to productivity issues that ultimately result in them not raising a lamb. If it’s a factor that wasn’t her fault then she will likely get another year to try. This year there was an old girl who didn’t have a baby. She’s not in good condition likely due to her teeth being worn down by time. We don’t put her on the list, but instead we deworm, vaccinate and shear her along with the rest. When the day comes to bring the ewes to grass she falls behind. So we leave her and get everyone else to the pasture then come back for her. We carefully lift her frail body into the truck and drive her the half mile to her summer pasture. Our daughter asks “why?” I say “because I want her to die on pasture.” We know that grass and pasture is the happy place for livestock and I was really hoping that she would make it through winter. This happens occasionally on the farm. She wasn’t a pet, she didn’t have a name. She lived her life quietly and she died today, peacefully, under a willow tree, on the side of her pond. For those who have had livestock you understand the value in letting these animals live and die with dignity. Not all of them can live out their natural lives here because, honestly it’s expensive to keep them fed and vetted and we have very small margins. But sometimes we just let them stay, when we know they aren’t productive and we know the outcome.

It’s easy to take for granted when you live in such a beautiful place. Thankful for my little slice of heaven. Sound on for whipoorwills, frogs and other Midwest evening sounds! 😉

Isn’t she a pretty cow?? Of course I’m partial 😉 She is a first calf heifer and is an Angus/Hereford cross.
