Ever wonder what your bees are thinking when they organize a frame? đ
When we pull a frame during an inspection, we aren't just looking at random chaosâweâre looking at a perfectly planned "nursery and pantry." Bees are master architects, and a healthy, productive frame almost always follows the same blueprint:
đThe Center (The Nursery):
Right in the middle of the frame is the heart of the hive. This is where the queen lays her eggs and where youâll find brood in all stagesâfrom tiny eggs to larvae to capped cells. They keep this area warm and protected right in the center of the cluster.
đThe Inner Ring (The Pantry):
Surrounding the brood, youâll see a band of pollen, or "bee bread." The nurse bees store this right next to the nursery so they have immediate, easy access to the protein they need to produce royal jelly and feed the larvae. Remember, pollen = protein!
đ The Outer Edges (The Reserves):
Honey is stored at the top and along the far sides. This acts as both an energy reserve and a thermal barrier, helping to keep the heat generated by the cluster centered right where it belongs: around the brood.

When youâre inspecting your hives, keep an eye out for this pattern!
If you see honey spotted right in the middle of the brood, your queen might be "honey-bound"âsheâs got no room to lay because the bees have filled the nursery with nectar.
Always make sure she has enough space to keep that next generation growing.
