🍂🥧 Pie season is alright with me! I’ve needed a break from cake for a while.

My availability is going to be more limited this holiday season. Not only am I switching up my focus, I am welcoming a new roommate/nephew — due to arrive within the next few weeks! 👶🏻

Throwing it back to a year ago when I began cake decorating! What a strange time this was. This is one of my first and most favorite hand-painted birthday cakes. 🎂

Little known fact: I never wanted to bake.

Like so many, being stuck at home on lockdown pushed me to fill my mind with new things. I was in and out of food service for years before the pandemic which lead to quite the distaste for working in kitchens. But with the limited resources I had, I decided to turn my experience into a jumping point for developing a new skill set. I got to learn new things about business, marketing, sales, networking, art, photography, graphic design, time management, collaboration, and even my least favorite thing — math! To me, this was never about baking. It was me training myself for my future goals. I will forever be grateful for this crazy time in history for pushing me the way it has!

Thanks to cake, I have had opportunities presented to me that I never would have expected before. At this point in life I have new doors opening, not all of which I am excited about. But I am always excited to learn and grow and see where they take me.

No matter what your occupation is, it doesn't have to be your life's purpose. But it can sure help prepare you for it!

Looking for a new hobby? Let me tell you about my love of painting! 🎨

I’ve done a lot of watercolor lately. It is at once a serene and challenging practice. Water flows unpredictably, and this is both the beauty and the frustration of it.

Now try that but on a canvas made of butter. Water doesn’t work here. You have to manipulate sugar, fat, and edible paint while racing the clock, and that results in less than magazine-worthy detail from me. But kitchen work is hectic and messy, so I may as well choose charm over perfection if I am to enjoy a single moment of it!

Whatever your craft may be, you must let go of control somewhere. We are always at the mercy of elements and natural laws. You learn to accept and work with them.

There is an egotistical perception that art must be something to master as though you could force it to bend to your will and become perfected, when really, it is a living thing just like you, and demands to be understood and compromised with. It’s a practice of love just like any other relationship.

This is so therapeutic for someone like me who has a history of struggling with chronic indecision. 😅 My recent method in any piece is to STOP trying so hard and see where that takes me. I am often surprised to see that the end result works out!

If you’ve been feeling like trying something new, just do it. Know which elements you can handle, make a decision, and let the rest flow. It always works out somehow. 🌊

I learned a new word in Swedish today! 📖 Smultronstället: A place of wild strawberries. 🍓

Idiomatically, it means a “special place discovered, treasured, and returned to for solace and relaxation — a personal idyll free from stress and sadness”.

Some days, a pretty box of treats is just that for my customers. In the same way, the very act of creation, in the kitchen or otherwise, is my own happy place.

Fun fact about me: I prefer painting & illustration with non-edible mediums. While I’ve been able to apply my creativity to sweets somewhat, I’ve missed working with simple ink, paint, and paper. It’s so important to have a peaceful space just for you, separate from the demands of business & other interruptions. This week I’m going to take some me-time just to draw whatever I want. 👩‍🎨 What’s your happy place?

☀️👩‍💻I am in my Sunday finest (zebra pajama pants) trying to get organized for the upcoming week (taking selfies at my desk)! Get a load of that mountain of mail I have to sift through. Oof.

I am SO ready for this summer of record-breaking heat and forest fires to make way for fall. It’s so close I can taste it, and lemme tell ya, it tastes like pumpkin pie and apple cinnamon. 🥧🍂

We’re sayin’ see-ya to strawberries for the year with one final pickup/delivery event this weekend in Herriman. If you’d like a box of fresh chocolate berries, DM me quick — I’m closing orders tomorrow.

Then it’s time to get planning those October parties. Don’t tell me I’m the only one thinking about Halloween — I see you, my people, in the home decor aisle. We’ve been eyeballing those skeleton throw pillows since July and you know it. 💀 Let me handle the matching party treats — custom cake orders are open for October and beyond. And don’t ever be too shy to hit me with your creepiest, most off-the-wall design requests — I may specialize in adorable treats, but I also delight in the unusual! 🧟‍♀️🪦👻
