Hey Kitchenatics family! Gather 'round, because itโs time for a little confession from the test kitchen.
A few years ago, when the sourdough craze hit everyoneโs timelines, I decided to finally cultivate my very own starter. I babied this thing for weeks. I fed it on a strict schedule. I named it (Dough-manse, naturally).
The day finally came to bake my first artisanal boule. I preheated the oven, dusted the counter with flour, and got to shaping. I was feeling pretty confident. I looked at the dough and thought, "You bready for this? Because Iโm about to loaf you so much." ๐ณโโ๏ธ๐
I carefully scored a beautiful leaf pattern on top, slipped it onto our baking rack, and waited.
Twenty minutes later, I peeked through the oven glass. Instead of a majestic, airy, golden-brown masterpiece... I had a sad, completely flat puddle. It looked less like a rustic loaf and more like a deflated pancake that had given up on its dreams.
I was devastated. I literally sat on the kitchen floor. But then my partner walked in, looked into the oven, looked at me, and said:
"Well... at least it's a crumby situation."
I couldn't even stay mad. It was the exact yeast they could do to make me feel better! The loaf was an absolute disaster, but the laugh was totally worth it. (And don't worry, the next batch rose to the occasion!)
Now, itโs your turn! ๐
