Johanson Sheep Farm

Johanson Sheep Farm We moved to Illinois in 2012. In the spring of 2013 we started our Boer Goat herd by buying 2 goats and the following year bought 2 Hampshire sheep.

Both herds have grown in number since then.

The lambs are weaned. There are 4 ewe lambs that are available, as we are not keeping any replacements this year. All from good maternal lines and are nice lambs. Weather lambs available as well - 4 are already sold to local 4-H members. The lambs were born between Feb. 7th and March 7th.

We’re about a month away from lambs so it’s time to shear and vaccinate the Ewes. I like to take before and after pictures because they look so different. The biggest transformation was “Leah” - she actually has a visible neck! It’s always hard to tell what condition the sheep are in with all the wool. They’ve been eating a lot of hay and just started on some grain. They look good without the wool - not too thin and not too fat. They are all ultrasounded with twins but one with a single.

Growing up on a dairy farm I heard the phrase, “You have to make hay when the sun shines” every summer! The sun has been shining here and today was a good day to make hay! We are thankful for neighbors who make good hay for our goats and sheep.

Mya participated in the carcass contest again this year. The lamb was a little bigger than we wanted for the contest and placed 4th. Still a nice carcass with plenty of delicious lamb meat. The lamb was sold on the auction and Mya’s grandparents supported her by buying the lamb. This has been a great project to be a part of. We encouraged another club member to try it this year and hopefully next year there will be a few more.

There are so many reasons why we love 4-H. “Learning by Doing” is a big reason. This year 3 4-H members in our club wanted to try the goat project. They’ve all learned so much! I believe hands on learning is the best, so each one of them washed, dried, and clipped their goats. Another thing I love about 4-H is the Leadership skills developed. Mya did a great job teaching and helping throughout the process. We’re all looking forward to the show tomorrow!!

The last ewe lambed on Saturday. We had been impatiently waiting, since she was ultra sounded for the 2nd. And since it’s been about 5 weeks since the first lambs were born - I like to have them a little closer together than that. She had triplets all on her own, 2 boys and 1 girl. We had a busy weekend and she looked fine when we left for a Valpo women’s basketball game and had the babies by the time we got home. I think we missed them being born by about a half hour. She’s a new mom and is doing great so far!

Update - both had 1 big boy! They were born close to the same time. The daughter was first because we needed to assist her - that was a big baby for her first time! All are doing well today.

From Cows to Goats and Sheep

Greg and Denise both grew up on farms in Minnesota, Denise on a Registered Holstein Farm and Greg on a large crop farm. They knew they wanted to raise their daughters, Nicole and Mya, on a farm as well. While in Minnesota they had the opportunity to live on Denise’s home farm. Greg’s job transfered the family to Illinois and they settled on a farm near Herscher. It didn’t take long for the girls to want to have animals in the barn. The first 2 Boer Goats were purchased in the spring of 2013. The following year, 2 Hampshire sheep were purchased. Nicole and Mya have shown the animals at the Kankakee County Fair as well as the Illinois State Fair. A few more goats and sheep were purchased, but at this time most of the animals on the farm were born here. This has been a great learning opportunity for the whole family and wouldn’t have been possible without the help of some great neighbors. What started as a really good 4-H and FFA project has turned into a lot more. Our adventure raising goats and sheep is really just beginning.
