DO NOT FEED YOUR GOATS CHRISTMAS TREES!

🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫

Commercially sold Christmas trees contain toxic sprays and treatments such as:

❌️ fire-resistance coatings

❌️ pesticides

❌️ scents (yes, that Christmas Smell is a scent sprayed on in a factory :( )

❌️ And, sometimes a green color coating (we wish we were kidding)

Please don't take a chance. If your tree came from a lot of ANY KIND there is a strong chance that it came from a large commercial production facility that sells to lots and stores of all sizes.

We also do not recommend adding these to your compost pile.

Instead, place it along a tree-line on your property or add it to an existing brush barrier, chip it, or... there's always a good old fashioned bonfire!

Please share with your goat-loving friends!

Abbott continues to be the Pottery Finding King on the farm.

The 3 newest pieces he found are glazed stoneware dating from the early 1800's.

We are working on dating the things as we find them. The prior owners created and left us this beautiful collection of tool shards, arrowheads, pipe stems and pottery.

We are adding to it as we can!

It appears that since the property backs to the Perquimans River the native pottery shards are from Algonquian-speaking tribes. The two most common of which were the Yeopim and Weapemeoc in our area.

The oldest pieces we have we think are the carved stone tools, possibly as old as 3,000 years BCE (so about 5,025 years old).

We have the coolest property. The history here is in layers and layers of dirt.

From Native Americans fishing on the river banks to early English colonial settlers, to the antebellum era, The Civil War, reconstruction, Victorian, the roaring 20's, the great depression, all the way to now.

The native pottery below with the matte texture is cord and net-wrapped, which pre-dates English contact by hundreds of years.

The final picture is what we believe to be the oldest pottery.

It's very coarse and contains pieces of crushed oyster shells.

The hunt continues 🖤

We found the bone yard!!

After digging down about 18 inches underneath one section between two roots we found all of the old broken scrap tool parts.

The ages of the items were reflected perfectly in the layers.

The newer items (late 1940's or so) were only about 3 inches under the dirt. These are the tractor parts and newer, sturdier pieces.

The older items (the hand-forged chain link and iron bracket) were about 18 inches under the dirt and are likely late 1800s- 1910's.

This was all heaped on top of each other in a single spot.

All found because one of the boys left a pitch fork in the yard and I went to stick it in the ground and hit something metal.

Back to digging soon!

Expanding the flock!

Greg wants to add more eggs to our current production, and these little peepers are estimated to lay about 280 eggs per year, each.

That should feed the boys for about 3 days.
