We almost sold out of our apple butter. So I made more, but we had to share with my daycare babies before I canned it. Let just say it was a hit! I may have eaten two biscuits smothered in it myself. We love fresh hot biscuits and apple butter!

It is no secret that I’m very proud of my Appalachian heritage. In fact, I can show you the spot on side of the mountain going up old Hwy 64 where my Daddy said he was born. With starting Burlah’s, I always wanted to share the traditions and knowledge I have learned from my Daddy and other true “mountain people” I aspire to be as good as.
Please allow me to share a piece of my past that truly represents the grit, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of my people.
While c**n hunting one night my Daddy found this “chopper” sticking in an old tree stump. It was probably rusty and dirty, but he brought it home. Cleaned it up and made use of it.
This relic for my life anyway was a cabbage chopper. Neighbors would borrow it from my Daddy when “kraut” making time started. I hated it as a child because let’s face it what kid wants to sit and chop cabbage. Later in my youth I learned to value its use at chopping cabbage easily and in fact it was one of the only things of my Daddy’s that I ever wanted when he passed.
Now it doesn’t get used as often. I need to sand it and grease it to be honest. I want to hang it up in our farm store for decoration. I love to look at it and imagine the person who made it. Did they see a need to cut up cabbage quickly for kraut or what did they use it for. It is homemade that’s for sure but it is something I am sure they never had time to sit back and appreciate its craftsmanship. As any Appalachian mountain person will tell you life was hard. And they had to work to survive.
I hope you enjoy looking at it like I do when you come shop at Burlah’s Home Farm Store. We are set up in what was my Daddy’s old room when he lived with us. The old carport before that.
Y’all come see us! Monday-Friday 9-6. Saturday hours will vary each week (if we are not at a market). Closed Sunday!

Our booth is almost complete! Come out to Created With Purpose Boutique! Their soft opening is Thursday and Friday and the Grand opening is on Saturday from 10 to 2!

Here it is folks! What I have been working on in my spare time!
Gourd Painting Kits!
We could not find a time to schedule a fall gourd painting party. So now you can pick your unique gourd from all the different shapes & sizes, take it home & paint it how you choose, shake & make music with it all winter, then come spring get the seeds out & plant your own gourd garden! I love watching them grow and take their shape. We have some really cool looking ones!
These will be available Monday-Friday at Burlah’s Home Farm store(located at our house), on Sundays at The Garden at Nacoochee Village, & soon at Created With Purpose Boutique in Hiawassee when they are open!
These will be fabulous presents for any kid. And it will be a present that keeps on teaching and entertaining them for a long time! So make sure and get yours and make memories your kids will
Never forget!
Larger ones for birdhouses will be available soon. Just starting out with our smaller gourds first.

We have been so busy lately I have not been posting all of our goodies we are making. We have been making apple butter for days. I promise I will post again soon to show all of our fabulous new products and restock of some favorites. Picture is not my own. But figured it would be a great giggle for everyone!
