2,000 onions near the end of their journey which started back in march when we seeded them. They were transplanted early June and have now matured to the point of harvest. They will be loaded on pallets and stacked to dry for 3-4 weeks, curing them for maximum storage. This variety stores very well. We are still using onions from 2024 harvest. This year we had mild Aster Yellows Phytoplasma (AYP) infection so most will make it to market. Most of these onions will end up in the Aurora School system via the Farm to School program. We will have some on hand for those of you who wish to stock up for winter. 😊

Fresh broccoli, straight out of the garden, is so incredibly delicious. I just ate the entire crown. We have over 100 crowns of broccoli ripening over the next few days. Most of this is headed to the Natural Harvest Food Co-op. If you’d like some, please let me know.

The is something magical about fresh-picked broccoli. The quantity of sulforaphane broccoli can produce when fresh picked is double that which can be produced after just one day. It is also quite sweet. Sulforaphane is a compound which has been heavily researched for its ability to favorably mitigate cancer cell growth.

Tomatoes are just starting to ripen. We will have three crops of broccoli, a large fall, crop of winter squash, cabbage, onions, carrots. We are just now harvesting garlic, which looks really amazing.

I apologize for the lack of updates. Taking care of four amazing foster children along with farming and web development has been kept me very busy. 🙂

I clipped the leader on the greenhouse tomato plants today. This will determine their final height by terminating their vegetative growth phase. The remaining part of the season should allow all those flowers to turn into ripe fruit.

The variety of this potato is called Blossom. It was bred by Ewald Eliason, son of friends of my grandparents, who had a dairy farm just east of the Hibbing airport. His parents came from the same Swedish speaking community in Finland that my grandparents came from. Last year I found this potato variety at Seed Savers Exchange and they sent me five tubers. The plant has beautiful purple blossoms, and the tubers have purple flesh and when sliced make a beautiful presentation on a dinner plate. He felt that with the beautiful purple blossoms that the plant might also be of horticultural interest. We now have 128 feet of Blossom potato growing in our market garden. So this variety has now returned to Hibbing.
