The Best Of 2026 Series - Part 1: Jujubes!

Cultivated for over 7,000 years, the jujube is one of the oldest—and most underrated—superfruits on the planet. Packed with vitamins A, B, and C, plus iron, potassium, and antioxidants, it’s tough, adaptable, and naturally suited for Backyard Orchard Culture or patio containers.

If you want a continuous harvest from late summer straight into fall, plant these three successive-ripening field favorites for 2026:

1. Li (Mid-Season) The top-ranked jujube in the U.S. for good reason. It produces large, round, drum-shaped fruit with an apple-like crunch, great sweetness, and fewer thorns to navigate at harvest.

2. GA-866 (Late Mid-Season) Widely considered the sweetest and crispiest of them all. This Chico Research Station heirloom features elongated fruit with an incredible sugar profile. Pair it with another variety like Li to maximize your yield.

3. Silverhill / Tiger Tooth (Late Season) Distinctive, tooth-shaped fruit that ripens late in the season. Exceptionally sweet, firm, and ideal for both fresh eating and drying. With a low chill requirement (150–300 hours) and dependable heavy production, it’s a powerhouse producer.

And that’s a wrap on an incredible day! 🌱

Today we welcomed students from Turlock High and Pitman High through for a firsthand look at what it takes to run a large-scale nursery. They followed a tree from tissue culture in the greenhouse to the field, the heeling-in beds, and our production barns, and tasted fresh pomegranates and persimmons along the way.

The biggest takeaway? Agriculture has a place for everyone. From accounting to data and tech systems, marketing to engineering and production, the opportunities in this industry are as diverse as the people who fill them.

We’re proud to partner with the San Joaquin A+ program to connect students with internships and future careers, and to help grow the next generation of industry professionals.

Want fresh blueberries all summer long without taking up your entire yard? 🫐 We are sharing the ultimate container strategy.

Blueberries make a beautiful edible ornamental for the patio and are incredibly easy to grow in pots for many years. Because they require a lower acidic growing environment between 5.5 and 6 pH, containers are the perfect solution if your native soil is difficult to maintain.

For the perfect acidic planting mix, combine:

    •    2 parts Acid Potting Soil
    •    2½ parts ¼-inch-minus Pathway Bark (adds pore space and is slow to decompose)
    •    1 part Peat Moss
    •    1 part Chunk Coir (adds pore space and holds water in suspension to increase time between waterings)
    •    ¾ to 1 cup organic Acid Fertilizer

Pro tip: Add about 1 inch of Pathway Bark to the bottom of your 18-inch containers before adding your main mix, and finish the surface with ¼-inch Pathway Bark as mulch to protect the roots from extreme moisture loss.

Don’t just plant for fruit. Plant for a succession of fruit!
