Whew. What a weekend. Over 9800 people showed up to this show. Here are snapshots of the day. None of the arrangements or individual entries are mine- they are all for your viewing pleasure for those who would like to partake in this activity.

At 5 o’clock, they allowed the public to take all of the flowers they wanted. It was pretty fun to see so many people excited about all of the different varieties.

Cleanup was quite a process. I’d love to know how many entries there were. This was an all volunteer event and they knocked it out of the park.

Next year the national show is in Rochester, New York, but the West Michigan Dahlia Society will have their own exhibition at Frederik Meijer Gardens.

If you need a hobby or a rewarding addiction, might I suggest dahlias 😂😂

I’ve even made some new local friends because of it!

I got to do a new thing, participate in a flower show. It happened to be a national show.

The National Dahlia Show is in GR this weekend, and what a blast it has been. Growers from all over the US have brought their blooms and their knowledge and passion for dahlias to the stage. For someone who spends most of her days with plants, this has been a real treat.

I jumped in feet first and entered the design completion. It was fun for me because I decided to be creative as possible and have been planning for 2 months how I wanted these designs to look. Floral competitions set categories. There were quite a few to choose from, they included “Tribute to Frederik Meijer Gardens”, “Chihuly” ( there is an exhibit here currently), “Pleasant Peninsulas” (incorporating two different vessels into one arrangement to reflect the two peninsula of Michigan), “Michigan Forests”, “Michigan Agriculture” and “Michigan Coastline”. Each category included a specific description of things that should be incorporated, such as Chihuly glass or elements of the gardens, agricultural products, sand/driftwood, creative leaf manipulation…

I chose three of the contests. We were allowed to write a description of our arrangements to explain why we used the materials we did. I think I spelled Petoskey stone wrong, and I had a little bit of a penmanship problem, but it was 1 AM and I was exhausted 😂😂

Here are my creations and my reasons for why I did what I did. I was very proud of myself because it took a lot of guts to enter this, and I did not buy one single thing for my arrangements. I grew it or I scavenged it, I found it in the garage and I even traded for some dahlias from my friend Laura Under the Sun Flower Company. While I love creating for other people, it was fun to do what made me happy❤️

On top of having an amazing weekend, learning and meeting new people, and enjoying the passion of horticulture, I won first place for my Michigan Forest arrangement.

I am going to make a separate post later today showing other people’s arrangements and some of the blossoms at the show. I don’t want any confusion over what is my work and what is their hard work .. and for those of you who love to scroll through pictures, it will be a real treat to see some of these blooms. If you’d like to see them in person, the show goes until 5 PM today and is free to enter.

Green Goddess Farms makes gift baskets as a special order. We get a lot of requests for them as housewarming gifts. In addition to flowers, I like to add produce and products from our farm.

This beautiful basket is a silent auction item at the Cheff Center Shindig tonight.  I added oats to the arrangements as a nod to the equines they are raising money for… because “Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy” 🎶 (anyone else know that song?)

It’s a rough life being a farm cat… supervising the picking of the flowers and the harvesting of the veggies….

Thanks to Mozart’s expert guidance, we have some delicious tomatoes, potatoes, summer squash/ zucchini and even some white eggplant (thought it would be fun to try something new, they are excellent on kebabs).

I love special requests… like “will you create a bouquet using the flowers we had at our wedding in an anniversary bouquet?”.

With almost 2 dozen ‘Mocha Mousse’ roses, this was a pleasure to design. It was a real stunner❤️

My sweaty farm helpers (my niece and nephew) picked tomatoes, washed potatoes and picked zucchini.

It has taken FOREVER to get the produce pickable this year- but seems we are here finally!

Lots of fresh flowers in the cooler as well.
