Yesterday was “Inspection Day”! As part of our commitment to farming in the most ethical, safest way possible, we carry multiple certifications including Real Organic. Lucy, from the Real Organic Project, a national farmer led and soil based certification program, spent the morning on the farm. We were among the first farms in the upper Midwest to certify Real Organic, joining as part of the original pilot project, and although certification takes time and energy, in the end, it’s the right thing to do. We grow a large variety of cover crops to improve and protect our soil, suppress w**d growth, and provide habitat for numerous critters. I walked into a 2 acre field of buckwheat yesterday and even with our drought was amazed by the number and diversity of insects. I took 5 random 1 meter square plots and counted just the bigger flying insects (3 species of bumble bee, honey bees, 2 wasp species, a sweat bee, a mason bee, a hover fly of some sort and a sphinx moth). A bit of quick math and at that moment there were more than 60,000 of these critters in this one field. And remember, these were just the easily seen large insects. There was a myriad of tiny bugs crawling and flying about. Plus a number of birds. A whole lot of life going on in this corner of HCF.

Today the world lost the physical presence of a true leader and mentor, Wendell Berry. However, although now gone in body, his soul will live on. A quick peruse of our bookshelf reveals a small bit of his legacy of poetry, prose, essay, and novel.

Wendell Berry is in part why we farm (and live) in the manner we do. I first encountered his writing in the mid-1980’s and his words led us to a path deep in the woods not often trod. Thank you Wendell for opening our eyes and hearts.

When despair for the world grows in me

And despite our extreme drought, we push on. We’ve spent 30+ years improving soil structure and growing practices. Although not a cure all for drought, there is some resilience and we will pull through, battered and a bit weather beaten but somehow stronger.
