Cock and Bull Farms

Cock and Bull Farms We've closed our doors to the public. We care about our animals and we take pride in all that we do. Our chickens are raised in a free-range setting.

If you want to ready what we were all about back when we used to do it, read below:

We raise free range chickens for meat and eggs. If you would like to treat you and yours to some of the best poultry around, get ahold of us, we still raise chickens like my Grandpa Poettker used to. Our egg laying chickens lay almost every color egg (except white): brown, pink, green, tan... pretty cool stuff.

I noticed that the last post I made to this page was almost a decade ago, announcing the hard decision to pause raising free-range chickens so the focus could be on raising a family. Today, the kids, Annie Grossmann, and I received our delivery from the hatchery, and it made my heart really happy, and I started to reminisce. I often think about all the great people I met on our free-ranging journey, and I miss those days often. For that reason, I figured I would use our baby chick homecoming day as an opportunity to say thanks for all the memories and let you know that this whole chicken farming thing runs in the blood.

Hey Facebook Friends, after several months of deliberation and passionate discussion, Anna and I have had to make the tough decision to take a break from the sustainable farming and local food scene.

Over the last 8 years our passion has turned from hobby to viable business, and we have met some of the most amazing people. Our customers are some of the finest people we've ever met. Many of you have become friends over the years, some of you have eaten at our table, we know your spouse and children's names, we've been with some of you for the ride during Chemo or other malady.

We've never had a bounced check, we've never had a soured business relationship, and other than the one time one of our customers stocked a freezer full of chicken before becoming a vegan a month later, we've never had a product return. Creating and cultivating these relationships are what we are going to miss as much as nurturing our feathered friends... but alas....

According to my google search, sustanable is defined as:

-Able to be used without being completely used up or destroyed
-involving methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources
-able to last or continue for a long time

With this decision in mind and our committment to sustainablility, both in agriculture and our personal lives, we have come to our decision. While we could continue raising our birds in a happy and humane way, Anna and I have both had to take on additional hours and responsibility in our full time jobs. As a result, we have to divide the little bit of time we have between our feathered friends and our daughter Polly, the true love of our lives. If we continued to divide our sparse time between Polly and raising poultry we would be failing our true mission of nurturing all life without burning ourselves out or allowing the things we love most to suffer or be shortchanged.

We still fully support the local food web, and our dedication to our mission of clean protein and food to table movements has not wavered. We still believe that knowing your farmer is important, knowing where your food comes from is critical, and sustainable production is going to be the key for society's future.

We will still continue to have eggs for a few weeks yet as we split up the flock and get our ladies to their new happy homes. If you or someone you know is searching for chickens or chicken equipment have them give us a shout.

Thank you all for the many years or smiles. If you've read this all the way to the end, I thank you, and Im sorry it took me so long to convey our most heartfelt thanks. Our hearts could not be any heavier, but we know its the right move.

All of our Bests,
Anna, Polly and Carl

We're sitting on a bunch of eggs! How about buy 3 dozen regular eggs, regular price, get a dozen of pullet eggs free!

After all the rain we've had, I can step out on our front porch an honestly say, 'yep, this place smells like a chicken farm'

With all the rain and cool temps we've had, it's been a small blessing that we didn't have any meat birds on the ground this spring. This type of weather pattern is incredibly tough to raise Pastured poultry in, so whenever you're sourcing your free range fryers from, show them a little extra love...

We do still have stewing hens available and stock starter packs for bone broth available as well as eggs, all non gmo and ready to roll

All our bests,

Anna, Polly, and Carl

After much deliberation, Anna and I are going to change a few things up this year. We've both taken new jobs, added Polly (the love of our life) to our family, and have had th reassess our chicken situation this year.

We will still have eggs available on the farm and through our retail partners, but or meat bird operation is going to be put on pause for a bit. We've decided to spend more time with Polly, which leaves less time for the chickens.

We still have some chicken from our last flock available for purchase on the farm (whole birds, drumsticks, stewing hens, stock starter) as well as Rensings pork products. And we're going to make a few appearances at the Goshen market this summer, but probably once a month. If you want C**k and Bull chicken, I'd suggest getting ahold of us soon, I'm projecting we will be out of chicken sometime in June.

We are debating setting a small flock this fall available by pre-order, and we will make that decision later this summer. We'll keep you posted.

We really appreciate working with all of you these last 5 years, and we're not quitting the local farming, clean protein, humanely raised animal scene, but to bring balance to our lives, we need to scale back a bit this year.

Thanks again for all your support. Over the years we've gotten to know our customers and their families, and we will miss those interactions with all of you.

If you're in the neighborhood and your kids want to try to catch a chicken, you're always welcome to stop in.

All our bests,
Anna, Carl, and Polly

First Edwardsville farmers market of the season. We have our chicken and eggs. And we're running a special today to celebrate the season, 3 dozen free range eggs for $12.50. The rain is holding off, and we're off to a great start!

The Land of Goshen Community Market stats Saturday from 8 til noon! We will be there with whole chickens, free range eggs (at least 100 dozen) and windcrest yogurt. Spring is here!

05/06/2015

It's almost Goshen market time! The Edwardsville market kicks off this weekend, and our girls have been very busy laying eggs. Last year we had a hard time keeping up with demand so we added another flock of 150 hens and are planning on bringing 100 dozen to the market, along with whole chickens and windcrest yogurt. Hope to see all those smiling faces again this year!
