This is my beautiful wife Marie and I’m Matt. Together we’re on a mission to teach people about the amazing long term benefits of eating, and drinking, more fruits and vegetables daily.
How did it all begin?
Marie grew up in downtown Houston while I grew up on a farm in upstate NY. Marie’s family ate a very, post world war, American diet. Canned vegetables, frozen burgers and steaks, with very little fresh fruits and vegetables. My family ate mostly what we grew and raised on the farm. However about 30% of what we ate was also, very American. Boxed cereal, canned soups, chips, etc.
Our story, together, starts in November 2015 when Marie and I met at a 24 hour fitness in Austin. We were both on a very similar fitness journey, but our diets were completely different. Marie was following a pescatarian diet while I was on a keto track (FYI, we don’t diet anymore). Immediately in our relationship we connected on food.
Both our families are rampant with diabetes and heart disease. Marie’s dad and grandpa passed away from complications due to diabetes and I lost both of my grandfathers to heart attacks. Marie’s mom is overweight, my dad lost all his teeth this year due to diabetes, and my brother, who is younger than me, had a stroke this year. You can say fear has lead us down lead us down the pathway of avoiding these horrible diseases. Ultimately, after trying a million diets, we’ve incorporated more fruits and veggies into our diet, eliminating anything processed, and drastically reducing our meat consumption.
What you put into your body matters! Our research and testing over the past 5 years was driven by the loved ones we’ve lost and those who’re struggling. Often times we don’t think about the long term consequences of our food choices. With Fruit & Root, our goal is to help people build better habits, like we’re doing, long term through our juices, programs and increasing the availability of great tasting, healthy, food choices.
Our world is filled with horrible food choices, and biologically speaking, we know it’s hard to overcome reaching for Twix bar instead of an apple. Believe us, we’ve both struggled with making those choices 😉
