Thank you everyone who has supported our farm and journey; however, for a variety of reasons, we have decided to close the farm as well as sell our home. We are looking forward to starting a new chapter as we say goodbye to Florida. As born and raised Floridians, we are sad to say goodbye, but we are excited to see what the rest of the country has to offer. We encourage you all to reach out to the other local farms as you continue to shop local and support ALL the amazing small farms Nassau County has to offer. When looking into any local farms, we recommend you ask as many questions as possible. If something truly matters to you, ask!
We all have our reasons why we do or don't do something. Remember, farming is not cheep, its the most expensive hobby/job that exists; but it is also one of the most rewarding.
Ask the farmer these basic questions: (Any good farmer WILL be proud to answer these questions).
-How are your animals raised?
-What specifically do you feed your animals?
-Are they medicated or vaccinated with anything specific, if so why have you chosen this (you may be surprised by these answers).
-Are they rotationally grazed, or confined to one location?
-Where do the animals come from, prior to you growing them out, and how long does it take to grow out these animals (again, you may be surprised by the answers)
If you truly care about non GMO feeds, be prepared to pay the price. Again, understand what this means and whether or not it truly matters to you and your family.
If you truly care about an Organic Certification, take some time and learn what that means as well as what it does not mean. Don't just assume "organic" means nothing added ever....
At the end of the day, if you really want to know where your food comes from, or you really want to "shop local", make an effort to go to that local farmers market, or meet up with that farmer. Go to that county commissioners meeting and be a part of the conversation. Don't allow your state's farmland and ag laws to dictate how or when you are able to obtain fresh local food.
Again thank you all for your support, this has been one of the greatest experiences of our lives and we are happy to have participated in Florida's farming community. This is absolutely not be the end of our farming journey!
