Trying some new tech here at the farm. If you drive by and see some weird boxes on my sheep, they are GPS NoFence collars to help me get a better pasture rotation going, cut down on parasite load and help manage things better. For the past month the sheep have been in training, learning that when they get to their boundary line and the music plays, they turn back. Today they’ve graduated to the big field.

I would love to have the cash to do all the cross fencing I’ve had planned for this place but this was the next best alternative and far cheaper. The horses will be rotating on separate paddocks, which does mean I’m out working on some fencing, but a manageable amount of it and not the massive project that needs done when we win the lottery. 🤪

As for the garden renovation, it’s been super duper slow. I should have gotten way more done over the winter but I didn’t and now I’ve had to shift gears to fencing instead. It’s also our son’s senior year (both high school and he will have his bachelor’s finished in June) and soccer is life, so it’s been busy. Quite a bit of flowers self seeded and are growing wherever they want which has its own beauty too. Lots of bachelor buttons and baptisia right now and a few peonies. I’m glad something is growing without me so I can still enjoy some flowers!

Starting in on the great garden remodel! The old “temporary” fence came down today and the dahlia tubers were pulled out. They could have stayed in for the winter and probably been fine in that bed, but the new garden needs to come in about 10’ and these were in the way. I’m surprised my snow fence survived this long as it had basically dry rotted and was falling apart as I was removing it. A big part of me wants to take a blow torch and just burn it all down in there… but I have plants I want to save and move so this has to be a delicate process.

It’s not all doom and gloom out there though. The hellebores and anemone are starting to bud up. It’s nice to have a few winter blooming things. I hope to add an assortment of camellias for more winter interest. Dead stick season is too depressing without flowers!

Happy new year everyone! May the year of the Horse be a good one for us all!

I’ve been silent here for a while now. It’s been a beautiful summer and I let the garden go feral. It still produced armloads of flowers for me, when I got adventurous to bush wack my way in. Dahlia season is currently on its way out but the mums are waking up to keep my house full of flowers until December.

I’ve decided not to reopen for flower sales next year. But I do have big plans for my flower garden and will be removing everything this winter to change the layout and start over. I do not need my production rows if I’m not selling and I want it to be a place that we can hang out in and enjoy. Of course, there will still be many flowers! I’ll post some updates as the demo gets going. But for now, here’s a glimpse of some pretty things from the feral garden this year. I’m sad for the growing season to end, but also soooo ready for a freeze to kill this garden off and to start in fresh with something new!

I’ve made the decision that there will not be flower or egg sales this year. The garden has had so much rain, it’s lovely and flowers are blooming, but not producing like it should to have enough volume to sell. I have eggs coming out my ears, but when I opened for tulip sales, no eggs were sold and with egg prices coming back down in the stores, I simply can’t compete. It’s better for me to add them to the dog’s food than to hassle with selling them.

Thank you to my previous costumers. I hope you stay following in case I try again next year!

Since prom is now over, I can share these fun bouquets I did for my kid’s dates. Two very different girls and I wanted them to fit their personalities. They were perfect. Most all the flowers were grown in my garden. I may have been singing to the peonies and giving them warm baths to hurry up so they didn’t miss the party, but they made it. 🤣

No, the flower stand is not open for spring flowers and may not open at all this year. It’s been a busy spring with soccer, ACTs, college tours and I’ve kinda neglected the flower garden. Plus I dislocated my arm again and that takes some recovery time right here during the important planting window. 🤷‍♀️ maybe this year isn’t meant to be. We’ll see.

An update on this little dude. He’s doing great and got to go out to the big field with the rest of the sheep tonight. He scares me because he sleeps like he’s dead and I have to go check on him all the time, but he’s nursing well and bouncing around like a baby lamb should, finally.

Miss Babbs, patiently (and not so patiently) waiting for her due date in 10 days. She’s been a good grandma helper to her daughter and newborn grandson while the little one has struggled to get his motor going this week. Good news is that he seems to be showing improvement. Fingers crossed for that one.

I was a little upset with myself for not planting any violets this year… found this happy little flower this morning. Thanks to last year’s violets, I got a cute little plant anyway. Curiously, 3 boxes over from where I planted last year, must have been dropped by a bird. Makes me happy I haven’t pulled weeds in this box yet because I would have totally pulled this out not knowing what it was. Lazy gardening paid off. 🤣

Flowers and baby lambs. Something to maybe brighten your day if you hate the gray weather and your farm is as flooded as mine. Yesterday, before the storm, Annabelle had a single ram lamb. All seemed well, today I’m not so sure but I gave him some B12 and red cell and I’m watching. Might be he’s just exhausted from the storms all night. Yes, they have shelters but sheep are weird and typically stay out in the rain. Not the best pic of the little one, I wasn’t able to get any good poses.

My little bit of sunshine are these gorgeous anemones. They’ve started blooming their hearts out for me, stems are still on the shorter side though. I cut these last night knowing the storm could knock them around. My garden check this morning is showing some ranunculus buds looking like they might finally open. Just in time to cover everything this week with the cold snap so they don’t get hit with frost. I’ve got some bachelors button blooms out there about to bloom and two peony plants loaded with buds…. Sigh. Gotta love AL weather.

Hope everyone made it through the storms without damage! I think this is the third time this year I’ve had to say “this is the most flooded I’ve seen the farm be” only for it to rain harder the next time…. 🙄 one of these days we dearly need to get some help to put in drainage ditches and maybe a runoff pond or something so we can pull water away a little faster rather than turn into a lake. It’s on the long term to do list.

I’m not really in the business of parting with sheep. However, this ewe does not respect my electric fence for pasture rotation and I’m willing to let her and her ewe lamb go. Mom is 3/4 Katahdin 1/4 Australian White, 2024 model. Ewe lamb is sired by my 100% Australian White ram. Perfect opportunity for someone wanting to get Australian White into their meat sheep herd. The meat is fantastic and closest to beef in flavor you’ll find. Ewe lambed unassisted in the field and has been a great mom. She’s not super domesticated but follows the group and doesn’t give me any problems aside from the electric fence issue. She knows she can slide the insulators up on my fiberglass step in posts and walk under… 🙄 I’ve gotten ahold of the baby several times to keep her as friendly as I can, she’s curious and you could probably tame her fine if you keep at it. My ram produces great temperaments on his babies. He’s a super sweet boy himself.
