Lawrence County quietly ranks among Alabama’s agricultural heavyweights 🌽🐄

You might not realize just how much is grown and raised right here at home.

According to the latest full U.S. Census of Agriculture, Lawrence County farms sold more than $323 MILLION worth of agricultural products in 2022—ranking 7th among all 67 Alabama counties.

And that’s just the beginning:

🌾 #5 in Alabama for total crop sales
🌽 #3 for grains, oilseeds, dry beans and dry peas
☁️ #5 for cotton and cottonseed sales
🐄 #10 for cattle and calf sales

Altogether, the USDA counted 1,139 farms covering 209,398 acres across Lawrence County.

And here's one number that really puts the scale into perspective: at the end of 2022, Lawrence County farms had more than 10.7 million broiler chickens.

Perhaps the most Lawrence County statistic of all? 98% of local farms were family farms.

Agriculture may happen quietly in the fields, barns and chicken houses around us every day—but the numbers show just how big a part of Lawrence County it really is.

Quick rule for better herd health: always have clean, fresh water available — animals that are dehydrated eat less and convert feed less efficiently, no matter how good the ration is. Feed quality only goes as far as water quality allows.
