My soils are not great...but they are getting there! Any one who wants to see the wonders of regerative practices and cover crops at work is welcome to come see for themselves.

It's extra work, it's expensive, and complicates things when you take away some of the "easy" buttons. But this soil is coming alive. Easily a dozen earth worms in this 6" clunk of soil and 100's of their holes to help water infiltrate. The roots from the rye and r**e seed or canola (yellow flowers) bind the soil and feed the micro eco-system that is living in healthy soils.

Notice the clumpy cake like texture and pore space from not disturbing the soil structure...this is ohhh so different than the clumpy texture after a field has been tilled. This soil is bound together by root and microorganism extracts that have created stable aggregates...so much so that this soil is nearly impervious to erosion.

It's never to late to make a change...especially when you're in control of the world's most precious resource.

Special Note: Last fall all the "buzz" was about the yellow bi-plane zooming around all hours of the day...well these are the results from it spreading a cover crop mixture early enough to let it get established...and soil health is all the "buzz" now.

And just to clear things up...for those that say that's mud...it is the farthest thing from that. There is moisture, but it is impossible to ribbon this soil. It's just soil...and not dirt.

This is what all the buzz was about with the Yellow Plane flying around the last few weeks!

This Rye was flown on a few weeks ago and then the soybeans were harvested a few days later. Although we have had very little rain the soybean fodder spread by the combine has created a mulch seed bed for the rye. It's off to a terrific start to protect, build, and feed the soil this winter. Plus, it provides terrific food for wildlife.

The rye root biomass will likely be 100's times greater on these established stands versus planting the rye after we harvest beans the next few weeks. Protect your soil...it's only yours for a little while.

Thanks to Advanced Acres Friedman Farms and Adrian Brunk for the great job!

The yellow plane in the New Market area is seeding Cover Crop Seed this week.

Flying it on gives the cover crop a much longer window to get established before winter.

The yellow bi-plane flying in the New Market and Hillsboro area this week has been pretty entertaining to see and sparked a lot of questions.

The plane is flying on cover crop seed.

By flying on cereal rye, oats, and r**e seed (canola) we're hoping to get an extra 30-60 days of growth before winter as opposed to trying to seed the cover crop ourselves after the primary crop is harvested. That better established cover crop will have better size and significantly more root biomass to help protect the soil through the winter and into next spring.

By flying it on it also opens up the possibilities of which cover crops we can use. Radish and many other cover crops winter kill when the temperatures drop much below freezing. So seeding radish November 1st doesn't give it enough time to establish and help the soil structure.

Your soil is a living, breathing ecosystem...it may look like dirt to some...but in healthy soils there are more microorganisms in a double handful of soil than there are humans above the soil surface.

We're trying to do our best to feed and protect the soil year round. Having something green year round is ideal.

If there are any questions please feel free to ask.

A big Thank You goes out to Randy Dowdy for making the trip from Valdosta, Georgia up to London, Ohio to share thoughts on how he raised 503 bushel corn along with a new world record 171 bushel per acre of soybeans.

His willingness to help others along the way is more than commendable. Thank you novus ag, Rosen's, and Innova Perfomance Procts for making the event happen!
