Yesterday, our team traveled to Carrboro, NC to visit a few organizations doing incredible community work and learn from their experiences!
We visited Weaver Street Market, a community-owned and operated co-op. We learned how a co-op operates, the benefits of their members recieve, how they create accessibility, how community members help shape new products, and the branding initiatives they’ve implemented to better reflect their values. We loved seeing the variety of options and their items that were made in house!
Next, we visited Feed Well Fridges, an organization dedicated to reducing food waste by rescuing food that would otherwise be discarded by grocery stores and farmers and transforming it into ready-made meals. Those meals are then placed in community refrigerators throughout the area, where neighbors can access them for free to help combat food insecurity. It was awesome to see different partners coming together to make it happen and left feeling inspired by their community dinners!
Lastly, Dr. Alice Ammerman, UNC Chapel Hill Professor and Director of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, welcomed our team into her home for lunch, where we sampled a variety of Good Bowls. What began as a passion project has grown into a locally sourced, locally made frozen meal company and Lifestyle Medicine Program that helps families conveniently access nutritious, nutrient-dense meals. Her advice to us were words from the famous Ms. Frizzle, “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.” 🙌🏽
We believe some of the best ideas come from learning alongside others who are passionate about building healthier, more connected communities. We’re grateful to everyone who welcomed us, shared their experiences, and inspired us with their work!
We’re excited to bring what we’ve learned back home and continue growing together. 💚
