🌿 The Wild October Garden 🌿

Even though the season’s starting to turn, our garden just isn’t ready to quit! This week we picked tomatoes, a cucumber, a couple of summer squash, and some bell peppers — and believe it or not, we’re still growing winter squash.

One of my sons and one of my daughters were right there beside me, helping gather up our little harvest. There’s something so special about watching their hands reach for the same plants I’ve tended all season — dirt under their nails, smiles on their faces, and that same love for growing things blooming right alongside the vegetables. 💚

This wild October garden may be unruly, but it’s full of life, lessons, and gratitude. 🌻

Life lately has been a sweet mix of little moments that feel so big when I pause to take them in. 🌿 We spotted a baby deer the other evening, delicate and wide-eyed, reminding me just how precious these fleeting seasons are. 🦌✨

Our days have been filled with cheering at the ballfield as our son plays his heart out ⚾️, tending the late summer garden 🌱🍅, and making flower arrangements from blooms we’ve grown right here on the farm 🌸💐. There’s something so grounding about bringing that beauty indoors.

Lazy lake days have been a favorite kind of slow—sun on our faces, laughter on the water, and the gift of just being together. ☀️💦 And I have to brag on our girl: our 11-year-old prepped 16 pounds of cherries 🍒 all by herself for jam and pie filling. Watching her step up in such a big way makes my mama heart so proud. 💕🥧

These are the days that string together into a life I know we’ll look back on and smile. ❤️

Look who’s living in our dill! 🐛🌿

We found some super cool black swallowtail caterpillars hanging out on our dill plants! These striped little guys love to munch on herbs like dill, parsley, and fennel — it’s like their favorite snack!

But the best part? They’re not just caterpillars… they’re future butterflies! 🦋 In just a few weeks, they’ll turn into beautiful black swallowtail butterflies that help pollinate flowers and make our garden even more amazing.

🌟 Fun fact: When they feel scared, these caterpillars stick out tiny orange “horns” from their heads that smell funny to bugs — it’s their special way of saying, “Back off!”

We’re keeping an eye on our tiny garden guests and cheering them on as they grow. Nature is so cool!

Bountiful Basil 🌿

Basil is one of those herbs that feels like a little gift from the garden every time you snip a leaf. Whether you’re growing the classic sweet basil, the beautiful purple opal, spicy Thai, lemon, cinnamon, or globe basil—every variety brings something special to the kitchen.

What I love most about basil is how useful it is. No matter the type, it can be tossed into fresh salads, infused into oils or vinegars, muddled into drinks, simmered into sauces, or sprinkled over just about any dish for a pop of flavor. And don’t even get me started on homemade pizza nights—basil is the star!

But if you’re growing more than you can keep up with (hello, abundance!), pesto is one of the easiest and most delicious ways to preserve that harvest.

Here’s our go-to recipe for homemade basil pesto:

🌿 Homemade Basil Pesto

Ingredients:
• 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
• ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
• ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
• ⅓ cup pine nuts (or try walnuts for a twist)
• 2–3 garlic cloves, peeled
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Optional: squeeze of lemon juice for brightness

Instructions:
1. In a food processor, pulse the basil and nuts until finely chopped.
2. Add garlic and cheese, and pulse again.
3. While the processor is running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until the mixture is smooth.
4. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice if desired.

Store in the fridge for up to a week or freeze in ice cube trays to use all year long!

Whether you’re making pesto, steeping basil in a jar of vinegar, or just garnishing a sandwich, basil is one of those herbs that keeps on giving. What’s your favorite way to use basil?

🌿 Even though we’re not on our own land right now, farm life doesn’t stop—it just shifts a little.

While we’re staying with my parents, we’re still getting our hands dirty, tending to the garden, and soaking up every bit of time with family. There’s something beautiful about slowing down, watching the kids run through Nana’s garden, ride on Papa’s lawnmower, and learn from Uncle Joe’s cows—all while dreaming about our own place again.

🐄 Did you know that cow manure is one of the oldest and most effective natural fertilizers? It’s rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—all vital for healthy plant growth. When composted properly, it improves soil texture, boosts microbial activity, and helps retain moisture. It’s a true garden goldmine (even if it’s a little stinky at first 😉)!

We may not be back at Hoof and Clucker Farm just yet, but our hands and hearts are still rooted in this way of life. 🌱

What’s your favorite way to keep farm or garden life going when you’re in between seasons?

Out here sweatin’ in the heat today 😅🌞 putting in work on my dad’s orchard 🍎🌳. Storms, life, and time have taken their toll — but we’re not lettin’ that stop us 💪. We’ve been out here replacing some trees, making repairs, and trying to breathe life back into something that means a whole lot more than just fruit. This is about legacy 🛠️🔥.

One of the coolest things we’re bringing back is the Arkansas Black Apple 🍏 — dark, firm, full of flavor, and perfect for cider, pies, drying, or just biting straight in. It’s a rare one, and it’s our primary focus for this orchard 🌲. Not every tree is Arkansas Black, but a good chunk are — and that’s our anchor crop going forward.

This is all part of building up something solid for the future — so when we finally get our homestead locked in again 🏡, we’ll have roots (literally) in the ground and some sweet products to share with the community.

Big shoutout to for helping us out 🙌🌱. If you’re ever lookin’ to plant something with purpose, they’ve got your back.

🍎🌳🔥💦

This season of homestead life looks a little different these days. I (Julie) will be posting more often!
The kids and I are currently staying with my parents while Dakota works three hours away. It’s not always easy being apart, but we’re grateful for the time we get to spend surrounded by family.

We’re enjoying the simple pleasures—Uncle Joe’s cows (moo moos if you ask our youngest daughter), Nana’s garden, and the slower pace of life while we work toward making our own little farm a reality. Our property is a work in progress, but every step forward gets us closer to our dream.

We’re looking forward to the day we have chickens scratching in the yard again, livestock in the pasture, and the joy of caring for animals on our own land. But for now, we’re soaking in this time of togetherness and all the lessons it brings (and everyone elses animals).

We’re so glad to bring our friends along on this journey—thank you for being part of it with us.

Expect more garden related content in the near future!
