Our Black Friday brought an unwelcome surprise. We regret sharing graphic images, but it's essential to shed light on the issue.
As a hunting family, we cherish our time outdoors pursuing big game. Unfortunately, on Saturday morning we discovered a carcass in the middle of our haystack in our yard. We are pretty sure it was a trophy class whitetail we’d been watching and hunting for the past three years. If indeed it was this nocturnal buck, it's disheartening it was taken illegally and in an unsafe manner. First the animal was on private property, in our yard. Second the only way to shoot this animal, based on where the carcass was, was either from the driveway or from the county road. It appears as though the shot likely came from the county road, and if that is the case the house is directly in the line of fire behind where the deer fell. Adding insult to injury, the poacher left the carcass taking only the quarters, backstraps and trophy head. They neglected to remove the rest or conceal the evidence. While not one of our livestock, which we have lost to hunters in the past, the incident has left us deeply disappointed, disturbed and frankly pi**ed off.
This occurrence unfolded in our stack yard, a mere 25 yards from the county road and 150 yards from an occupied home. Regrettably, we were absent on Friday afternoon/evening and did not witness this or see the carcass in the dark when we got home.
Were this a case of a fair-chase, ethical, and legal harvest, we would feel a measure of sadness about the death of a trophy class buck we had admired the past three years but would have some sense of solace knowing that the hunter had at least “done it right.” If you have information or hear someone boasting about bagging a whitetail in our area, please approach it with suspicion and report it.
Instances like these make it exceptionally difficult to welcome hunters near or on our ranch, given our unfortunate encounters with such behavior.
