Dorothy is seventy-one and she lives alone across the road and she started chemo in December and she asked in January if she could come to the barn on Thursdays. She said she needed somewhere quiet that was not her house. I said yes immediately and I did not ask why because the why was clear. She came every Thursday. I gave her the chair at the end of the aisle and I did the feeding around her presence and I did not make a project out of her visiting. The first Thursday my grey horse Haze did something I did not ask him to do. He positioned himself close to her chair. Not intrusively. In the way a large animal positions itself near something it has decided requires proximity. By the third Thursday he was standing beside her chair for the full duration of her visits with his head at her shoulder height and her hand on his neck. He did not ask for anything. He did not want anything from her. He was present beside her in the way he is present beside things he has decided to be present beside. Dorothy's chemo ended in May. She still comes on Thursdays. She says the barn got her through it. I say the horse got her through it. I was just holding the door open. That was enough to do. 🐴
