Last weekend I ended up at Costco for the first time in many years. Someone was promoting home water filtration systems and offered a free home water test. I was curious and signed up. They were able to come out the very next day, after work. The process was 15-30 minutes and I was stunned it wasn’t some hard sell for their systems. Just a test, and explanation, and answering questions. Not even a business card ;) The test of tap water was beyond the max scale in Chlorine and Nitrates, which is common here. They also did a side by side test with our tap water versus one thru their system. This was disturbing ;)

I also had them test some water that I had previously had filtered for this visit - and it was substantially lower than the tap. (Photo below is of the test of the water I provided, not from their system.)

These home systems are costly, but now I understand why so many of my friends have installed them - even if it’s just the lower cost under the sink models.
