Interviews with Cicadas

So we're almost ready for the Cicada Chorus, and Mating Season (and not laying eggs in my orchard trees). Only about a dozen trees in the orchard left to protect, and a half dozen of Shakers prized ornamentals that I'll likely finish by Monday. Supposedly, rain sets off their season, and Wednesday through Friday thunderstorms are expected thus predict we'll be in full force Cicada Nirvana starting Wednesday.

Otherwise had a bad day. Groundhogs had excavated gravel from under rubber horse mats in my barn. I forgot about this and fell through the mats while attempting to grab produce carrying totes and then fell backwards directly on my tail bone. So thereafter, having crunched my lower spine I quite painfully assembled this week sales inventory for the farmer's market, and barely got it loaded to our faithful blue truck "Old Blue" with Shankar's assistance. Was a painful night, but thought I might survive Saturday market day, although excruciating.
..so we left for market early this morning and only ten miles down the road on the interstate the truck broke down. Thankfully we were towed, produce and all, back to the farm and unloaded perishable plants, and then retowed the truck to Bloomington. Bloomington Dodge says they are booked to June 1st, meaning, it's good we have another truck for market day. Who knows? Thus broke my back, hurt my tail, lost a day's revenue, truck broke down... After some rest, tried to vacuum the house and broke the vacuum cleaner. What a day!

Decided to amuse myself with emerging cicadas a moment, as an interlude to stitchinh the last set of tree pillowcases....

As a scholarly mother with a son just delivered to the proximity of his university, this article echoed many of my concerns, as schools contemplate reopening this fall. Clearly these are difficult decisions, and I worry not only for health of students, faculty, support staff and the community, but also the future of education and the progression of essential research, especially where collaborative (e.g. laboratory or orchestral) engagement is essential. Clearly the economic losses are catastrophic, and we're all up s$^t creek, without an adequate paddle. Imagine sending your child to school? To a residence hall? Imagine serving as faculty? Education is a core value in our family, thus, I was glad this IU faculty outlined her concerns.

Yesterday–Thursday, May 21—I received an e-mail from Indiana University President Michael McRobbie addressed to all IU colleagues. The message shared news about the “phased reopenin…
