October can still be surprisingly productive in the vegetable garden. 🌱🍂 I usually look at the soil temperature and first frost date rather than assuming the season is finished.
🧄 Garlic is one of my priorities now. I plant individual cloves with the pointed end up, then give them a layer of mulch once colder weather settles in.
🥬 Spinach, arugula, and leaf lettuce appreciate cool weather, although how much harvest you get depends on how quickly winter arrives in your area.
🌱 Radishes are useful when there’s still a short growing window because many varieties mature quickly.
🌾 If I’m done growing vegetables in a bed, I’d rather plant a suitable cover crop such as winter rye than leave the soil bare all winter.
My October rule is simple: check your USDA zone and average first frost date first, then plant around your local conditions instead of the calendar alone. 🍁
