We had the sweetest morning hosting our nature playschool friends at Ayers Ridge Homestead , and days like this are exactly why we love opening our little slice of the world to others.

The kids met animals they had never seen (or held!) before, explored the farm, completed a nature scavenger hunt, made a craft, gathered for story time, and made some sweet new friendships along the way.

And the best part? Harvesting, cutting open, and sharing our very first homegrown watermelon together! 🍉 Watching a group of kids experience that simple joy was one of those moments we’ll never forget.

Sometimes the best childhood memories don’t come from screens or schedules—they come from muddy boots, curious hands, and a morning spent on the farm.

Pearl spent her days rooting around, enjoying sunshine, mud puddles, and plenty of snacks. Today, she’s filling our freezer and helping feed our family for months to come.

Homesteading isn’t always easy, but knowing where our food comes from and honoring the animals that provide it is something we’re deeply grateful for.

One of our favorite budget-friendly ways to grow the homestead is by giving commercial laying hens a second chance. 🐓

When a local egg operation ages out their hens after their first molt, we purchase them in bulk and bring them home. They still have plenty of life—and eggs—left in them, making it an affordable way to expand our flock while giving these girls a fresh start on pasture. 🥚🥚🥚

Meet the homestead’s tiniest resident, Torti! Our very unoriginally named Sulcata tortoise calls the tomato garden bed home, where he’s busy exploring between the plants and soaking up the sunshine. 🍅🌿☀️

Don’t let his small size fool you—Sulcata tortoises can live for over 100 years! There’s a good chance Torti will outlive all of us and still be wandering around the homestead long after we’re gone. 😂🐢

For now, he’s just a little guy living his best garden life. 🪴❤️

Observe the farm child in its natural habitat… willingly becoming a chicken feeder. Once our kids saw the kids doing this, they had to give it a try🤣 How many different types of animals can you spot coming in for the buffet??
